Interesting but incorrect information throughout

While it is an interesting book with great case examples, I would not recommend it for use in a class (or for any reference) as there are several inconsistencies with the DSM-IV-TR. It claims to have been updated just this year (2013), but it is apparent that was just a pathetic attempt at the editor/author trying to get a new book out to increase profits, as the content has quite obviously not been updated and the editing is very poor given all of the inaccurate statements. It is not consistent with new, politically correct terminology (for example, the book still uses terminology such as "Schizophrenics"); it incorrectly identifies disorders that are NOT present in the DSM-IV-TR but were in the DSM-IV; and it mislabels criteria from the current DSM (Inconsistencies in the length of time criteria must be present, for example, have been found). The textbook had been recommended for use, but as an instructor I have cringed several times in reading the chapters and will never use the book again and highly recommend against its use in any class higher than a high school psychology course (and even then I would be hesitant given all of the errors in it).

A perfect book for very young readers.

Peter Linenthal moves outdoors in this fourth volume of his wonderfully inventive series for the youngest book lovers. My grandson loves to look at Linenthal's startling black and white drawings even more than he likes to chew on the pages. I especially love the dashes of green that offset the black and white.

Perfect book for infants

I love this book so much, I purchased a duplicate copy for a friend that just had a baby. The images are lively and the high contrast was perfect for my then 2 month old to follow. He responded very well to the images and this book helped introduce him to books. Now at five months, he still gets excited when we bring this book out.

A fun, silly, and serious Christmas story

Told in the first person by a pageant participant, this book chronicles the cataclysmic events that take place when the yearly nativity play is hijacked by the worst children that ever existed.
It can be read on several levels. Children and adults alike will be unable to stop laughing as disaster builds upon disaster. However, those who are so inclined will also find themselves reflecting on the meaning of the story of the birth of Jesus.
Hysterical, honest, and sometimes very touching, the story is aimed at ages 7 - 10, but is very suitable for reading aloud and in that way could be enjoyed by all ages.

Probably the best collection of stories I have read in awhile. It has the classics from Gilgamesh to Genji, Odyssey to Oedipus and includes pre-tense and history of the tale before the story to help understand the poem or analogue ahead.

I appreciated the no-nonsense explanations for the sometimes incomprehensible world of employee stock options, tax implications, and guidelines regarding what you should negotiate for when joining a new company. I recommend this book to any new startup employee. (and anyone who is already an employee, but doesn't understand how options work.)

Outstanding

Books of historical humor are of two types: those that are more funny than factual and those that are more factual than funny. This one is the latter type. You will find no laugh-out-loud hilarity here. No doubt it is clever, entertaining, and amusing, but you won't split your sides laughing. It is solidly fact-based, however, and you can really learn from it. You could even use it as a textbook. Bibliography included. The art work is outstanding!

Book 1 of the series covers a lot of ground, from the Big Bang to the Old Testament. Through the dinosaurs and the early hominids to the first civilizations at Egypt and Sumer, and points in between. Early agriculture, tools, and animal domestications. Nomadic tribes and warfare. Volume 4 follows the Israelites from Sumer to Egypt to Canaan to Babylon, with much violence along the way. But such was the Holy Bible!

A good overview, but not always an easy read, with so much material crammed into so few pages. Thirteen billion years of history in one book means that some of the kings tend to get jumbled together towards the end.

About the Author

John J. Schiller is an associate professor of mathematics at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.

R. Alu Srinivasan is a professor of mathematics at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. at Wayne State University and has published extensively in probability and statistics.

Murray R. Spiegel (deceased) received the M.S. degree in physics and the Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large companies. His last position was professor and chairman of Mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center.

Worth every penny. The book walks your through the types of problems you are bound to see in undergraduate/ or even graduate level Stat classes in a simple concise manner. It provides just enough theory.

This is a reality check for those who know some math.. but not a huge amount

Okay, so you have seen books to be or profess to be a book on statistics but this handy book shows a relationship and link to probability. As an outline it has loads of new concepts, but does not require a lot of math to becoming accomplished in practice. In short, it is concise, to the topic at hand, and gives you the necessary steps to compute statistical or probability outputs.
