If you haven't read book 1 in the King's Dark Tidings series you must do so to make sense of both book 2 and the first paragraph of my review. This is one of the better series that I've seen in fantasy It's fascinating to see the main character grow over the course of both books. Highly recommened.

By Michael R. Green
I read the first book and loved it. The main character is fairly complex and has a very unique perspective on the world. The strength of the book comes from the dynamic nature with which the main character is developed, the way he experiences the world and how his unique upbringing makes him inhumanely capable in some regards, and painfully naive in others, the juxtaposition makes for an interesting dichotomy. The way the other characters that surround him adapt and change is very satisfying the watch unfold as well. The overall plot is interesting, although at the end of the second book I'm hoping there are still some surprises left for the third...which I'm sure there will be.

For negatives I think the top of the list has to be Frisha, Rezkin's love interest. For all the interesting layers to Rezkin's personality, and even the dynamic change that has overcome the nobles and some of the guards surrounding Rezkin, in my opinion Frisha has remained fairly flat. Frisha continues to react with the same silly jealousy and angry outbursts that have accompanied her since she was introduced. She hasn't developed any further martially, she hasn't developed in her new role as a quasi-noble, she hasn't really matured, and she's still treated by Rezkin like a helpless and silly girl. It's surprising to me that almost all of the other characters, including the seemingly more minor ones from book 1, have developed much more and much more interestingly than has Frisha. I'm hoping the author will do something with her in book 3, because I really don't look forward to more of the same from her.

I'm also hoping that Rezkin finds more challenges in book 3, while I get that the main conflict with him thus far has been the disparity between how he was raised and how the rest of the world actually is (and it's masterfully done), having an overpowered character can get boring quickly...not to say that it's happened here, but if his seeming invincibility continues in book 3 I think that for me it will.

Overall this series has me thoroughly hooked. While Rezkin's skills and abilities are...what they are, the way that his character develops and those things are revealed are like tasty little breadcrumbs that keep the reader strung along, desperate for that next bite. So far the author has done a masterful job of revealing just enough to make the reader desperate to find out what's next, framed by an interesting story and world-building. My biggest disappointment right now is that I thought book three was out for some reason, and I'm now facing the devastating reality of finding out that book two was just barely released. I hope the author is making a healthy profit from these books (they are part of Kindle Unlimited) because he deserves it.

Throw Rez some more physical challenges, make Trisha more likable and interesting, and continue on with the rest. I'll be counting down the days until I can continue on this fascinating journey.

Eagerly awaited book 3 in this series...
By Amazon Customer
Best sword and sorcery protagonist since Bahzell Bloody Hand. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the first one. Characters are nicely developed and a lot of fun to read about. Rezkin is both brilliant and ignorant and the dichotomy this produces makes consistency difficult but Kel does a pretty good job with it. I was sad to find I have to wait for the next book in this series to come out. I eagerly await it and however many like it we are fortunate to have him write.

Dagestan: Russian Hegemony and Islamic Resistance in the North Caucasus, by Robert Bruce Ware, Enver Kisriev

Like other majority Muslim regions of the former Soviet Union, the republic of Dagestan, on Russia's southern frontier, has become contested territory in a hegemonic competition between Moscow and resurgent Islam. In this authoritative book the leading experts on Dagestan provide a path breaking study of this volatile state far from the world's gaze. The largest and most populous of the North Caucasian republics, bordered on the west by Chechnya and on the east by the Caspian Sea, Dagastan is almost completely mountainous. With no majority nationality, the republic developed a distinctive system of calibrated power relations among ethnic groups and with Moscow, a system that has been undermined by the spillover of the wars in Chechnya, Wahhabi and Islamist recruiting efforts targeting youth, and Moscow's reassertion of the 'power vertical'. Underdevelopment, high birthrates, transiting pipelines, and the rising incidence of terrorist violence and assassinations add to the explosive potential of the region. Authors Ware and Kisriev combine analysis of the dynamics of domination and resistance, and the distinctive forms of social organization characteristic of mountain societies that may be applicable to other areas such as Afghanistan. They draw on decades of field research, interviews, and data to offer unique perspective on the civilizational collision course under way in the Caucasus today.

Between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea
By Susan Southworth
Dagestan came blasting onto front pages in March 2010 when suicide bombs on two pretty young women from Dagestan exploded in central Moscow. Both came from educated families and comfortable homes. Mariam Sharipova, at 27, had two master's degrees and taught computer science at the local school. Magomedali Vagabov, her secret husband, had recently terminated his relationship with her. In interviews, her father, a teacher of Russian literature, denied she could have been married. Both her parents insisted she never left the house alone except to go to her school.

Yet twenty-four hours after Mariam left the high mountain village of Balakhani in a marshrutka on a routine shopping trip with her mother, she and Dzhernet Abdullaeva were photographed on closed circuit TV entering an outlying Moscow subway station. Mariam rode a train crowded with commuting workers to Lubyanka station. Just as the doors opened, her bombs exploded. Forty minutes later Dzhernet exploded in a train as it reached Park Kultury station. Forty people were killed and 100 injured by those bombs on March 29, 2010.

Disturbing photos were soon published showing 18-year-old Dzhernet posed adoringly with a gun and her secret husband, Umalat Magamedov, leader of Dagestan's Shariat jamaat. What brought these sheltered women 1000 miles from their villages to commit mass murder? Internet flirtations with the warriors led them to be bombers when they found themselves in unbearable dilemmas. When Vagabov tired of Mariam and Magamedov was killed in a shoot-out with police in Makhachkala, each had the choice of taking another warrior as lover or giving her life for the cause. (Vagabov did not long survive Mariam. Russian security forces killed him and four other militants in Gunib, a central Dagestan village in late August 2010.)

Ware and Kisriev's book fills the void of knowledge about the north Caucasus republic that was home to these four. The authors present Dagestan as democratic and improving its governance until President Putin increased federal control on September 13, 2004. Western writers criticized this move but did not emphasize, as these authors do, that it was a direct response to the Beslan school massacre of 330 young children, mothers and teachers in the first three days of that September. They criticize Putin's too-willing cooperation with the region's traditional Sufi Islam and his emphasis on security that "led Moscow to support corrupt local officials instead of removing them..."

Ware and Kisriev devote most of the book to the traditional village means of self-government, competing versions of Islam, linguistic and cultural traditions. They don't evade local failings including "relentless political rivalries," "methods of political assassination that are traditional in Dagestan" and terrorism. Enver Kisriev is an ethnic Lezgin from Dagestan, providing authenticity to the depiction of local circumstances. "The ideologies of absolutism and expansionism that have been sequentially propounded by Imam Shamil, Shamil Basaev and other Islamists are incompatible with the traditionalism, the parochialism, and the pragmatic moderation of North Caucasus cultures." Though the Soviets recognized only 14 Dagestani ethnicities (and organized them in rotating ethnic trios of leadership), Kisriev knows the dozens of distinct ethnicities of his republic from the Akhvakhs to the Tsakhurs. He analyses and details the finer points of the politics of imams and muftis throughout Dagestan. Here also is the most complete explanation as to why Shamil Basaev invaded Dagestan, Nazran, Beslan and Nalchik.

As the life expectancy of Russians declined drastically in the 1990's and birth rates fell, Dagestan's population doubled between 1970 and 2000 and life expectancy became ten years longer than in Russia as a whole. While the collapse of the federal state was a disaster in most of Russia, it was an optimistic period in Dagestan which emerged with "...a coherent and stable political culture" and elections that are "...generally free and fair, reliably determining political winners of competitive races, and bestowing legitimacy upon the results." But its democracy "was neither Western, nor Eastern, nor Slavic..." It "... conformed neither to the Russian federal constitution nor the expectations of Moscow political observers." As the Russian state gradually rose from the ashes of the 1990's, it expected republics to conform to federal constitutional law, a development Dagestan resisted.

Village by village, a reader of this important book becomes familiar with the largely unknown republic of a still troubled region.

Shiny happy Jedi holding hands (this review is for adults)
By Alt
I assume the point of the artwork here is to make the comic consistent with the cartoon animation, but this isn't a cartoon, and compared to other graphic novel artwork, this is awfully unsophisticated. The Jedi make happy smiley faces at each other whenever they have a bright idea or are about to enter a battle. At other times they make standard cartoonish faces. Maybe that goes over well with little kids but this is marketed to Star Wars fans, not just to little kids.

Unfortunately, the writing isn't any better than the art. The story seems to be geared toward seven-year-olds. The authors felt a need to have one Jedi explain "the Force" to a Jedi-in-training, as if the newbie Jedi wouldn't have already known about it. The characters speak to each other as if they were preteens. Bad guys say things like "Good evening. Time to die" while the good guys make brilliant remarks like "Gotcha!" The story features a lot of action to disguise the plot's lack of depth. The overriding philosophical question is: Can clones use the Force too? The correct answer seems to be: Only if they can make a happy smiley face while fighting!

A bit of intelligence shines through in the story's concluding panels, which earned it a second star. Sadly, you need to breeze through a lot of nothing before reaching those panels.

This review is for adult readers. If you are a parent shopping for a preteen, this might be a great purchase.

DEFENDERS raises major questions for Star Wars fans!
By Sean A. Guynes
A review from my "Star Wars Comics Review" blog. To read the whole review, and other Star Wars comics reviews, go to: [...].
This book poses two very interesting questions, aside from elaborating on the Death Watch and its affiliations with Dooku and the Separatists, and bringing to life B'ink Utrila, who before has only appeared as background in EU literature from this period.

At the heart of this story is the question of Force sensitivity and the clones. Naturally, as Rennax points out, the clones are living being, and therefore they too have midichlorians and could potentially be Force sensitives. This concept has already been explore, or at least confirmed, namely from the early (re)beginning of the EU as we know it, with Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire (1991), which features a Force-wielding clone of Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth, named Joruus C'baoth; later there would be clones of both Luke (Luuke) and Palpatine. More recently, there were X1 and X2, from Star Wars: Battlefront: Elite Squadron and Dark Jedi Sa Cuis' clones from Imperial Commando: 501st Legion and short stories.

Thus, that Glitch is Force sensitive is not really a groundbreaking revelation, but DLT brings us up close and personal to the issue: Glitch is mocked by the other troopers in his unit, he is rather incompetent, and his Force sensitivity is more a burden than a blessing, since is causes him social and emotional anxiety. In short, Force sensitivity is used as a foil for Glitch to explore the concept of clone autonomy, or what it means to be a bred and 'programmed' organic war machine. This is brilliantly played out, and though not as brilliantly written, Aclin has to be given credit for a conceptually strong story.

DEFENDERS Is A Throwback To The Days When Comics Were Fun
By Edward L Zimmerman
Alas, if you haven't heard the news yet, but STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS has reached the end of its television run. Lucasfilm released the announcement just on March 11 (2013). While showrunner Dave Filoni makes it clear that there are still stories in that universe yet to tell (a planned sixth season was well underway despite the announcement of cancellation), who knows how soon those episodes or direct-to-DVD releases will see the light of day? In the meantime, Dark Horse continues to explore the most fragile time for the Galactic Republic, so I welcomed DEFENDERS OF THE LOST TEMPLE with open arms. As though of you who've followed my reviews over the years know, I'm definitely a fan of all things Star Wars, and this was a very nice story told for an audience wanting more.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

The outer rim moon of Draay 2 holds a secret: deep within its jungles, there's a lost Jedi temple. And somewhere within its walls, there's a hidden Sith artifact known as `The Gauntlet of Kressh the Younger,' an object that can protect its wearer from any physical harm whatsoever. A clone assault team - lead by Jedi Knight Utrila and her apprentice, Rennax Omani - are sent with one goal in mind: either retrieve the gauntlet, or make sure that it cannot be found by Count Dooku's Separatist forces.

With just a touch of the charm that elevates the Indiana Jones stories to the level of mainstream entertainment, DEFENDERS OF THE LOST TEMPLE pits the Jedi, her padawan, and the troopers in a race-against-time to uncover what booby traps await their discovery in the ancient structure. Lightsabers and blasters will only protect them so far; what really works to save the day in this adventure is their collective enthusiasm for solving puzzles and `sensing' where others have been trapped before. Plus, a surprise attack lead by Pre Vizsla and some Mandalorian warriors of the Death Watch might pose the greatest challenge to completing their mission successfully ... assuming they all survive, that is.

For those concerned about `continuity' or liking to know where this tale fits in to the Star Wars universe, it's set during the Clone Wars, and a quick explanation in the opening clarifies that it specifically takes place between Seasons 4 and 5. The artwork is heavily reminiscent of what's seen graphically on the popular Cartoon Network television program, and the narrative mostly matches the maturity of the stories told there. If anything, LOST TEMPLE might be considered a bit more `kid friendly' than some of the meatier episodes - much of the story's focus deals with padawan Rennax and Clone Trooper Glitch as the two of them try to come to grips with who they are and what they're meant to be. In fact, there's an inspired `twist ending' of sorts in the final pages that serves to remind its audience that it isn't so much who you are that shapes your world; rather, it's what you choose to do.

Fans of the show should definitely pick this one up. Younger fans will probably be drawn to the simpler animation, as well, so it's suitable as a gift for that Star Wars youngling in your life. May the Force be with you and them!

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: DEFENDERS OF THE LOST TEMPLE is published by Dark Horse Comics. The story is written by Justin Aclin; the art is by Ben Bates; the colors are by Michael Atiyeh; and lettering is by Michael Heisler. This graphic novel bears a cover price of $7.99 in New Republic credits, a bargain for any reader.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Sure, it may lack some of the intellectual depth of the more complex tales of the Star Wars universe, but so much of DEFENDERS OF THE LOST TEMPLE is a delight. It's filled with adventure, likeable characters, and some simply drawn artwork. Buckle up and pull back the cover to explore this jungle world of adventure - complete with Jedi-inspired booby traps for those who brave these territories - and remember what it was like to be a kid again when reading a grand comic book. Everything you could possibly want is here, and fans of the Clone Wars TV show are even treated to a few inspired guest appearances.

In the interests of fairness, I'm pleased to disclose that the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics provided me with an advance digital copy of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: DEFENDERS OF THE LOST TEMPLE for the expressed purposes of completing this review.
