The Dog Stars (Vintage Contemporaries), by Peter Heller

Hig somehow survived the flu pandemic that killed everyone he knows. Now his wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley.

But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2012: Adventure writer Peter Heller’s The Dog Stars is a first novel set in Colorado after a superflu has culled most of humanity. A man named Hig lives in a former airport community—McMansions built along the edge of a runway—which he shares with his 1956 Cessna, his dog, and a slightly untrustworthy survivalist. He spends his days flying the perimeter, looking out for intruders and thinking about the things he’s lost—his deceased wife, the nearly extinct trout he loved to fish. When a distant beacon sparks in him the realization that something better might be out there, it’s only a matter of time before he goes searching. Poetic, thoughtful, transformative, this novel is a rare combination of the literary and highly readable. --Chris Schluep

Amazon Exclusive: Author Peter Heller on the Star of The Dog Stars The inspiration for Jasper, a Blue Heeler mix, who is an integral part of this novel.

Our Hero, Hig, lives at a little country airstrip which he shares with his beloved blue heeler Jasper, and a mean gun nut named Bangley. It's nine years after a super-flu has killed 99.7% of the people on the planet. Hig sleeps out under the open sky at night with Jasper. He does it because he loves to see the stars, and because it's safer: if marauders come he won't be trapped in one of the nearby houses.

He used to have a book of the stars, but now he doesn't, so when he's lying out at night he makes up constellations. Mostly they are animals, and he makes one for his best friend Jasper. The Dog Stars. It's Hig's way of reinventing the lost world, and keeping in touch with the things he loves.

Jasper, to me, is the star of the book. He is fiercely loyal, and he gives Hig something to live for when there is not much else to hold on to.

Review

A San Francisco Chronicle and Atlantic Monthly Best Book of the Year

“Extraordinary. . . . One of those books that makes you happy for literature.” —Junot Díaz, The Wall Street Journal

“This end-of-the-world novel [is] more like a rapturous beginning. . . . Remarkable.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“For all those who thought Cormac McCarthy’s The Road the last word on the post-apocalyptic world—think again. . . . Make time and space for this savage, tender, brilliant book.” —Glen Duncan, author of The Last Werewolf

“Heart-wrenching and richly written. . . . The Dog Stars is a love story, but not just in the typical sense. It’s an ode to friendship between two men, a story of the strong bond between a human and a dog, and a reminder of what is worth living for.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“A dreamy, postapocalyptic love letter to things of beauty, big and small.” –Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

"Heartbreaking" —The Seattle Times

“A brilliant success.” —The New Yorker

“Beautifully written and morally challenging” –The Atlantic Monthly

“A book that rests easily on shelves with Dean Koontz, Jack London or Hemingway." —The Missourian

"Dark, poetic, and funny." —Jennifer Reese, NPR

“Terrific. . . . Recalling the bleakness of Cormac McCarthy and the trout-praising beauty of David James Duncan, The Dog Stars makes a compelling case that the wild world will survive the apocalypse just fine; it’s the humans who will have the heavy lifting.” —Outside

“A post-apocalyptic adventure novel with the soul of haiku.” —The Columbus Dispatch
“An elegy for a lost world turns suddenly into a paean to new possibilities. In The Dog Stars, Peter Heller serves up an insightful account of physical, mental, and spiritual survival unfolded in dramatic and often lyrical prose.” —The Boston Globe

“Take the sensibility of Hemingway.  Or James Dickey.  Place it in a world where a flu mutation has wiped out ninety-nine percent of the population. Add in a heartbroken man with a fishing rod, some guns, a small plane. Don’t forget the dog. Now imagine this man retains more hope than might be wise in such a battered and brutal time. More trust. More hunger for love—more capacity for it, too. That’s what Peter Heller has given us in his beautifully written first novel.” —Scott Smith, author of A Simple Plan and The Ruins

“With its evocative descriptions of hunting, fishing, and flying, [The Dog Stars], perhaps the world’s most poetic survival guide, reads as if Billy Collins had novelized one of George Romero’s zombie flicks.” —Publishers Weekly (starred)

“The Dog Stars can feel less like a 21st-century apocalypse and more like a 19th-century frontier narrative (albeit one in which many, many species have become extinct). There are echoes of Grizzly Adams or Jeremiah Johnson in scenes where Heller lingers on the details of how the water in a flowing stream changes color as the sun moves across the sky.” —The Dallas Morning News

“Full of action and hope…. One you’ll not soon forget.” — The Oklahoman

“A heavenly book, a stellar achievement by a debut novelist that manages to combine sparkling prose with truly memorable, shining, characters.” —The New York Journal of Books

“Gruff, tormented and inspirational, Heller has the astonishing ability to make you laugh, cringe and feel ridiculously vulnerable throughout the novel that will have you rereading certain passages with a hard lump in the pit of your stomach. One of the most powerful reads in years.” —Playboy

“The Dog Stars is a wholly compelling and deeply engaging debut.” —Pam Houston, author of Contents May Have Shifted

“Beautiful, haunting and hopeful. . . . Makes your breath catch and your heart ache.” —Aspen Daily News

“At times funny, at times thrilling, at times simply heartbreaking and always rich with a love of nature, The Dog Stars finds a peculiar poetry in deciding that there’s really no such thing as the end of the world—just a series of decisions about how we live in whatever world we’ve got.” —Salt Lake City Weekly

“What separates Heller’s book from other End of Days stories is that it doesn’t rely on the thematic fail-safes to tell the story—The Dog Stars is quite simply the story of what it’s like to be alonet.” —The Stranger

“Proves a truth we know from our everyday nonfictional lives: Even when it seems like all the humans in the world are only out for themselves, there are always those few who prove you absolutely wrong—in the most surprising of ways.” —Oprah.com

“Heller has created a heartbreakingly moving love story. . . . It’s an ode to what we’ve lost so far, and how we risk losing everything.” —Cincinnati City Beat

“A stunning, hope-riddled end-of-the-world story. . . . Bound to become a classic.” —Flavorwire

“Heller’s writing gives you a heartbreaking jolt, like a sudden wakening from a dream.”  —The Seattle Times

“Heller is a masterful storyteller and The Dog Stars is a beautiful tribute to the resilience of nature and the relentless human drive to find meaning and deep connections with life and the living.” —Julianna Baggott, author of Pure

“Terrific . . . With echoes of Moby Dick, The Dog Stars . . . brings Melville’s broad, contemplative exploration of good and evil to his story.” —Shelf Awareness

“Heller’s surprising and irresistible blend of suspense, romance, social insight, and humor creates a cunning form of cognitive dissonance neatly pegged by Hig as an ‘apocalyptic parody of Norman Rockwell’—a novel, that is, of spiky pleasure and signal resonance.” —Booklist (starred)

Brooding, With A Dash of Suspense
By R. P. Cotta Jr.
Fans of "doomsday" and "post-apocalypse" stories will find a lot to like in Peter Heller's "The Dog Stars." And a bit not to like. Hence my three-star rating.

The to like aspects include the unfolding story of Hig, his dog Jasper, and their odd companion Bangley, who lives by the maxim "shoot first" with no need to ask questions later. It's just that kind of a world, where every surviving Human is a threat to every other.

Hig is a pilot, who flies recon out of their derelict residential airport in an old Cessna, Jasper sitting second seat. When outsiders wander inside the "perimeter," it is usually Hig who spots them, and Bangley who does the wet work. Hig eventually flies off to hunt down a radio call he's heard, and finds more than he expected he would.

The not to like aspects of the book include its sort of "stream of consciousness" first person narrative, which at times is a bit confusing; and the slow pace of the first 125 pages or so.

The story revolves around Hig's efforts to survive in a hostile world, and his battle to preserve something of himself from the "before." In the end, it's about how the remnants of Humanity might try and stitch back together the fabric of social existence after it has been shredded. If there is a moral to the story, it must be that the Human spirit, and the Human heart, do not die easily. If there is a lesson to the story, it is that surviving the apocalypse is easier if you happen to know a former special ops soldier or two.

I enjoyed the book. It's not the sort that will grip you from the first paragraph on, but it will enmesh you in Hig's thoughts and feelings as it moves along, especially after he leaves on his quest. Most fans of "doomsday" or "post-apocalypse" stories will probably enjoy it as well.

Dare to Live Even When It Kills You
By TipsWithALip
It is hard for me to describe the power of this book, and I was surprised just now when I rated the mood of this post-apocalyptic story as "hopeful." But, in its odd, idiosyncratic and special way, I think it is. Even though the journey to that point of hope is a real doozy.

When I read this book, I was reminded of Tolstoy's line - "There is nothing great where truth, simplicity, and beauty are not present." This book hits all three, although they come in atypical and, at times, devastating forms. There are passages in this book that are more beautiful, more achingly honest, about true loss than almost anything else I have read, and they are all the more powerful because of the poetic simplicity of the prose, the sparing and economical word choice - the feeling you get that if anything else was said, it would not only be nonessential or redundant, it could finally crush the spirit beyond the possibility of recovery.

This book reminds you that the end of the world is not only a subjective expression but a completely subjective feeling; for some, the end is not real at all, for some the end happens nearly immediately, and for a few, the end doesn't happen until the person they are is gone and the reason for continuing to struggle to live is merely due to "curiosity." A chilling reason, but perhaps accurate. The mundane everyday drudgery is punctuated by sudden moments of pure horror, disgust, and savagery. During the span of one evening reading this book, I nearly vomited and then later cried harder than I would like to admit.

Some have complained about the clipped, stream-of-consciousness style of storytelling, but I think that is apropos for this tale. After all, when the end comes for the world and pretty much everyone is gone, what else would you have to hear, or listen to, than your own thoughts?

If all civilization came to a shuddering stop, what would enable the survivors to survive long-term? Would it be the homicidal ape that we are, the ability to kill and trap resources the most effectively, or would it be the better angels of our nature? Would it be the willingness to drop the gun, drop the sword, even if we had every reason to shoot or stab? What would really keep us alive? Perhaps more important, what would make us want to keep living?

I hope you have as rewarding an experience reading this book as I did. It will crush you, it will disturb you, but it will also lift you up- maybe you will even soar.

A Good Book
By Roadhouse
This was my first "post-apocalyptic" book. It was fine, although I think that some of the rhapsodic reviews the book has received are a bit over the top. Here, most of the world is done in by disease. The survivors apparently were immune. Our hero, Hig, is one of them. He is a decent guy. He can fly a plane. He has a great dog, his co-pilot, whom he loves. They're best pals. Hig's second best pal is an armed to the teeth warrior, a ruthless killer whose sole ethic is survival. The front of the book explores the emotional pain and guilt of the amoral and murderous world in which Hig, his dog and his friend reside.

But Hig has heard a distant radio signal that he is determined to track down and investigate ( a nice lift from Nevil Shute's "On The Beach"). He prepares his plane for the flight and leaves. Along the way, he happens upon a remote Eden-like enclave, occupied only by a beautiful woman and her salty, capable Dad. Together, they enjoy some near normalcy for a while. It's all very charming, but duty calls and Hig must fly and seek out the signal. What's not to like?

Heller's writing style is snappy and cool and there are some beautiful passages. It will be some time before I read another book in this genre, but I'm glad I read this one.

Radio Frequency Identification and Sensors: From RFID to Chipless RFID (Iste), by Etienne Perret

This book deals with the field of identification and sensors, more precisely the possibility of collecting information remotely with RF waves (RFID). The book introduces the technology of chipless RFID starting from classical RFID and barcode, and explores the field of identification and sensors without wire, without batteries, without chip, and with tags that can even be printed on paper.

A technique for automatic design of UHF RFID tags is presented , aiming at making the tags as insensitive as possible to the environment (with the ability to increase the reading range reliability), or, conversely, making them sensitive in order to produce sensors, meanwhile keeping their unique ID. The RFID advantages are discussed, along with its numerous features, and comparisons with the barcode technology are presented. After that, the new chipless RFID technology is introduced on the basis of the previous conclusions. Original technological approaches are introduced and discussed in order to demonstrate the practical and economic potential of the chipless technology.

Review

“This post-apocalyptic tale is one that combines reality with the stuff of nightmares, crawls under your skin, and forces you to question your own courage and survival instincts.”

— Marissa Meyer, author of Cinder

About the Author
Mike Mullin first discovered he could make money writing in sixth grade. His teacher, Mrs. Brannon, occasionally paid students for using unusual words. Mullin’s first sale as a writer earned ten cents for one word: tenacious.
Since then, he has always been involved with literature. One of his early jobs was shelving books at Central Library in Indianapolis. Later, he paid his way through graduate school in part by serving as a reference assistant. Mullin has worked in his mother’s business, Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, for more than twenty years, serving at various times as a store manager, buyer, school and library salesperson, and marketing consultant.
He wrote his first novel in elementary school — Captain Poopy’s Sewer Adventures. He’s been writing more or less nonstop ever since, but fortunately for his readers, Ashfall will be his first published novel.
He holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife and her three cats. Visit www.mikemullinauthor.com for more info about the author and Ashfall and its sequel, Ashen Winter.

I loved this book!
By Melissa's Rambling
Read from May 10 to 13, 2015

This book is really good. It's such a creepy thought that it could really happen!

I loved the characters Alex and Darla.

Alex decides he wants to stay home while his parents and little sister went out to visit relatives about 2 hours away. Unfortunately, after they leave the supervolcano at Yellowstone National Park decided to erupt. Naturally chaos ensues. Alex stays with his neighbors for a few days before heading out to try to find his family.

This journey involves a few nice people, some starvation, killers and killing, many deaths and a fight to survive.

Alex runs into Darla and her mom on their farm while he is traveling. They take care of him since he was half way to dead from a vicious fight with an ex con, although Alex can hold his own with his martial arts skills. Darla's mom is a sweetheart, Darla not so much at first, she is leery of people and I can't say I blame her. But, she stitches him up and they all seem to have a wonderful little time on the farm, at least the best they can in the situation. Until some bad things happen then Alex and Darla head out on his quest to find his family. He was staying with them to get his strength back but still planning to leave, it just happened sooner than he thought.

Darla and Alex see a lot of things on their travels. Most of them are not nice and they have to do some not so nice things, but they stick together and do whatever they have to do to survive.

I really liked this book even though I wanted to smack Alex a few times. It seems Darla had to get them out of his messes a lot. I look forward to the other two books in the trilogy! I have to see what is going to happen!

Good post apocalyptic yarn about individual survival after a major volcanic eruption
By Michael E. Farrell
A good story that kept my interest in the same general theme as "An Empty Land of Plenty " and "The Last One".

This is the 1st book in a 3 book series.

In this story the super volcano under Yellowstone National Park erupts sending tons of ash and gas around the continent. Our main character, Alex, is a 16 year old teenager in Cedar Rapids, IA, who decides to join his family visiting his uncle in Warren, IL. Because of the fallout from the ash, no vehicles can operate, the roads are all buried in several feet of ash, and none of the water in the streams and lakes is drinkable.

The story then relates Alex's adventures traveling to rejoin his family as he is constantly looking for food, water, and shelter, while defending himself from would be thieves and murderers.

The story does end with Alex making it to his uncle's home, only to find that his parents have started back to Iowa to find him, setting up the theme for the second book of the series.

5 stars? I think yes.
By Mckenna
I really enjoyed this story. In regards to a few reviews/comments I have read/seen, this book really isn't appropriate for younger teens and tweens, however that is up to you. *There is no sex, though the likes of it is mentiones here and there

I really enjoyed Alex's perspctive. His voice and attitude played the part well. He was strong--considering all that he goes through in the search for his mom and dad. So basically the just of the story is: A fifteen year old boy named Alex is left home for the weekend while his parents travel 100 miles to his uncle's farm. Hours afte his parents departure, a volcano erupts, leaving everything covered in ash. Alex makes a decision; he will travel on foot a hundred miles through feet of ash and darkness (and ash filled air) to find his family. Along the way, he meets some nice people and some not so nice looters and other freaks. Eventually, he meets Darla-- and together they make their way through the fog.

The characters in this book are not disappointing. Darla is the 21st century Fa Mulan; I want to be her. She is brave, tough, strong, fearless. She has the upper-hand. I mean the girl has a thing for motors -- she's bad@§§!

Anyways, I was hooked from the start…
the writing in my book is great. The plot is awesome; I love stories where characters have to survive world distruction, or whatever you want to call it.

so 5 stars for this keeper - thank you Mike Mullin for a great story!

A good book, but not the first to get
By Gulley Jimson
This is a good book, with plenty of useful information, but it shares about half of the plants (and even some of the pictures) with Leda Meredith's "Northeast Foraging," also from Timber Press, and I think it is worth point out that Meredith's book is consistently more informative and useful.

Here are a few examples. Meredith's entry on spicebush gives you very specific instructions for using the fresh leaves, the twigs, and even two different ways to use the berries; Rose just tells you to dry the berries and twigs and use them as an allspice substitute. For ginkgo, Meredith gives you an oven temperature and time for roasting gingko nuts; Rose only gives you information on what wines to pair them with. (I find the former more useful.) For jewelweed, also in both books, Meredith tells you exactly how to tincture it in vinegar for use as a poison ivy remedy, which strikes me as the most important use of the plant; Rose only describes food uses, and mentions that jewelweed often grows close to poison ivy, but doesn't note that the plant also might provide a solution to this problem!

This is a consistent pattern between the two books. Meredith provides more possibilities with varying levels of processing and effort involved; Rose tends to have fewer uses, often with higher levels of effort, and not always the uses that seem most sensible to me. There are also a few too many "simple syrups" in Rose's book for my taste -- I don't tend to go out into the woods looking for ingredients for my cocktails. (If you do, more power to you.) All in all, I just feel like Leda Meredith knows these plants better, and writes about them in a way that makes me excited and confident to use them. If I had picked up Rose's book first, I think I would have done less with the information.

There is plenty of good in her book, though, and she clearly knows what she is talking about. As with Meredith, the photographs are beautiful, and there are some plants here (ground ivy, pennycress, and kudzu) that are everywhere, but rarely written about. Timber Press has designed and put together these books with care, and both are worth having, but I would look to Meredith's book first -- don't let the "Northeast" in the title scare you away, because most of those plants can still be found in the Midwest.

Great fun!
By R. Fischoff
I'm not a survivalist awaiting a zombie apocalypse -- just a curious vegetarian who
likes to explore wild edibles that pioneers and native Americans found nutritious.
I have two and a half acres including a forested creek, I let all of my land be natural.
(meaning no pesticides, no herbicides, no trimmed hedges, no perfect flower beds)
The book is a winner for people like me who want to know curious things.

Enjoyed this book- lots of pictures
By R. Ramirez
My mother really liked this book so I purchased it for her, and after paging through it, I also enjoyed it. After making a case for the inclusion of more wild foods in the diet, the author describes a list of plants (one per chapter) with a lot of good ideas, nice quality pictures, history, and personal stories in to illustrate each. I have since tried milkweed (loved it), nettles (alright), and wild cherries (lot of work, but nice if you get a good tree), among others and it was fun. I have read a few wild foraging type books and this is among the ones I enjoyed most.
