About the Author
Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938) was an extremely talented cartoonist, illustrator, and storyteller. He had already written and illustrated a book of original fairy tales before creating the first two Raggedy books, Raggedy Ann Stories and Raggedy Andy Stories. Raggedy Ann, heroine of the first, was the favorite doll of his daughter, Marcella, who died after a long illness at the age of thirteen. It was from her that Johnny drew inspiration to eventually create over forty Raggedy Ann and Andy books, all capturing his unique vision of childhood. Many of the stories, illustrations, and adventures in the Raggedy Ann storybooks were based on Marcella's childhood adventures. Raggedy Ann in the Deep Deep Woods was one of Johnny's early adventure storybooks and has become one of his most enduring.

Johnny Gruelle: Classic Children's Literature Deserves to make a Comeback

These were the stories my Dad read to me as a kid. They ought to be available to a new generation of children via all the major B&M bookstores. But as someone who once worked in a bookstore for five years in college back in the '90s, I observed even then that these works were never stocked. As a result, too few children are exposed to Johnny Gruelle's timeless classics. These are incredibly imaginative and whimsical stories, with illustrations completely unlike anything produced by anyone else (meaning much better than most children's illustrators/cartoonists' today). But more than that, these books convey values of kindliness, compassion and the Golden Rule. Every children's librarian should stock Gruelle's books and every major bookstore should carry at least some of of these classics. Back in the '70s and even into the mid '80s the dolls were ubiquitous. By the '90s, however, the dolls and the stories seemed to fall off the map. It would seem that because Disney never gained control of these classic characters, they have fallen out of the mainstream over the past 20 years, in particular. That's a real shame! I wish the Gruelle estate/hometown would work harder to publicize these works to a new generation.

Meeting Raggedy Ann

When I mentioned to my niece that I would like to bake a raggedy ann cake for her 4 year-old's daughter's birthday, she confessed to me that my grand-niece had not yet discovered Raggedy Ann. I was astounded. I remembered that my aunt had made my first daughter a Raggedy Ann doll and how treasured it became.
So I immediately ordered a copy of "Raggedy Ann in the Deep Deep Woods." from Amazon to send to my grand niece. I was delighted! It was the same edition I had loved as a child. It had the pictures I remembered so well of lollipop plants and cookie flowers. Best of all I was reminded of the message of the book: "Be kind, be unselfish, be a good friend, have a big heart, and always believe in the magical quality of life."
Raggedy Ann's Deep Woods are filled with faries and talking animals who reinforce this message. The last lines of the book are spoken by the fairy Queen,..."Almost every unselfish wish in the world comes true, whether there are faries about or not!" Neither my girls or I ever believed the faries were real, but the message stayed with us.
Just a side note: I was thrilled to learn that Johnny Gruelle's son had moved to the mountains of N.C. where I grew up and that he was continuing his father's work. I was even more thrilled when my parents introduced him to me and my daughter. He immediately insisted on drawing four-year-old Laura a framable autographed picture of Raggedy Ann and Andy sitting by a stream making their magical wishes.
Hurrican Ivan blew away the picture we had treasured for 35 years. But
when I read once again the book about Raggedy Ann and her Candy heart it brought back a flood of magical memories that I would wish for any child.

Bill had never felt this way before, she consumed his every thought and no matter what obstacles she tossed up, he willed himself to overcome them all. What neither of them expected was the level of hostility their parents would show towards their blossoming romance as dire measures were taken that would have permanent consequences.
Inspired by a true story, the novel is set in and around Santa Monica, California, in the early 1960’s. With the backdrop of Hollywood, the music industry and local community college, the story intertwines education, religion, the arts, family contentions, and the potency of an inviolable love. The story is humorous at times and tragic in others as it follows the young couple through the twists and turns of a forbidden romance. Their love carries them against all odds, and it seems for a time they have endured it all, but can their love save them from a final crisis?

Ty Isham's book No Regrets weaves a beautiful love story between two college students during the 1960's who had to triumph over much adversity just to be together. Their problems included cultural differences, family conflict, inheritance, religion and just about every challenge their love could face. You will laugh, cry and not be able to put this book down. You will then, like me, be asking for volume II. You will be left just knowing their has got to be more to this beautiful story.

Anger, Joy, No regrets!

Well written. If it was based on a true story I thought it very sad they both had such selfish and cruel mothers. I really enjoyed the story but almost want to criticize some of the choices the characters made and then remind myself it was based on a true story. It had many wonderful life experiences that many people face and it was easy to feel the love they had for each other. I do not want to spoil the ending so that is all I want to say.

Not for the beach bum

The book is organized by continents and further more by countries. The pages are color coded which helps when looking for a specific location. There is a brief overview about each item and a picture included. Some of the most common questions, like Where is it? or How do I get there? or When is the best time to travel is highlighted in the margin. I'm surprised at some of the locations mentioned in the book, certanly not mainstream. I have never heard of some of the places described and on the flip side some of the very famous places are mentioned. A very good buy for an active traveler, with a bit of flexibility and the ability to spend a bit more.
After skiming through the pages I am planning a trip to Machu Picchu.

As the other reviewer mentioned, this book is organized by various continents and regions within these continents, making it a very user-friendly reference for the traveler who wants information, is planning a trip, or is just curious about the region. For instance, if you wanted information on places to travel or see in Australia and Oceania, you would turn to this section and find information on such places as The Great Barrier Reef, The Whitsunday Islands, Victoria's Great Ocean Road, Bryon Bay, Syndey Harbour, etc. Each page is organized beautifully, with a picture of the area, and brief facts, such as "What is it", "What is it Known For", "What is there do to there", "What is there to see", and "How do I get there." There is also a full page description about the area, more in the line of historical information, the culture of the people living here, and what to expect when you visit.

Very cool book for the traveler, or the curious!

For anyone whose hobby is travel this book is a gem. Firstly it has been reprinted fourteen times since the first edition in 2006. It is thus a popular book and is part of a series of titles such as '501 must-see cities' or '501 must-read books'. The book can sometimes be found discounted making it exceptional value.

This is a medium size coffee-table book containing a photograph on almost every page. Most of the photographs are excellent, but a few looked a little blurred. It is printed on good quality paper and weighs 3.6 pounds, making it too heavy to take on one's travels.
It is an 'ideas' book that can suggest new and exciting places to visit or one can scan its colourful pages and remind oneself of unusual and interesting places that one has visited. What about the 501 places chosen? Most people will have other places that they would like to add, but there are no destinations that appear in the book which are not worth visiting. It could be argued that Europe is over-represented whilst Australia/Oceania and India are under-represented. The text explaining each destination is clear and helpful.

Purchase this book and enjoy travelling with the authors seeing the world's marvels through their eyes.

About the Author

Charles E. Dibble (1909-2002) was an anthropologist, linguist, and scholar specializing in Mesoamerican cultures. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees from the Universidad Nacional Autónomo de México and taught at the University of Utah from 1939-1978, where he became a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology.

Arthur J. O. Anderson (1907-1996) was an anthropologist specializing in Aztec culture and language. He received his MA from Claremont College and his PhD in anthropology from the University of Southern California. He was a curator of history and director of publications at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe and taught at a number of institutions, including San Diego State University, from which he retired.

For their work on the Florentine Codex, both Dibble and Anderson received the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor of the Mexican government; from the King of Spain the received the Order of Isabella the Catholic (Orden de Isabel la Católica) and the title of Commander (Comendador).

Best of the Series

PJVs QUICKIE POV: My favorite of the Pendragon Series, Primal Pleasures was a treat to read.

REVIEW: At the end of Book 2 Sorcha and Cale have tracked down the sorceress that they think bespelled Cale's brother Cian. They have drug her back to their family home and chained her to the gargoyle form of Cian until she undoes the spell that has turned him to stone for 100 years.

Poor Emma is pretty used to be mistaken for her sister Elena, so this scenario is nothing new to her. Her more powerful sister is also a little quick on the draw and has a habit of getting herself into trouble and waiting for Emma to come in and clean it up. Emma doesn't know how she is going to clean up this mess though. Chained to a very fierce looking gargoyle she resigns herself to just sit their and wait for someone to come and get her out of the pickle her sister put her in. What she doesn't expect is the gargoyle to wake up and she comes face to face with a very male and very sexy man - that is pretty angry with her, but also strangely attracted to her.

To protect her sister she can't tell him the truth - but as they try to shake the curse and enemies are popping up around every corner, she is finding it harder and harder to resist him and keep up the charade.

Great story, best of all three. I'm now a total fan girl of Ms. Somers and I think I might have a bit of reading to catch up on! I really like the characters in this one, I like Emma's vulnerability, which I'm usually not fond of, but it totally worked in this one. I also like that they thought their attraction was caused by a curse so they resisted it, instead of going head over tail into the whole mate thing. Definitely worked for me.

The one thing I'm kind of up in the air about this whole series is that there is so much to this world that I believe this series can be so much more. It can be expanded on and pushed to a new level. It is very original and quite an epic idea that I really believe that they might have been better served as full length paranormal romance novels. They have these listed as category length, which I'm not sure what that is - but basically I think it is not a short story, but not quite a full novel. Novella??

RECOMMENDATIONS: Adults only. Paranormal Romance fans, shifter fans should enjoy. The price is cheap too, so don't worry about splurging. Listed for $3.60 on amazon.com

Emma is a sorceress and the "good twin" who is always suffering the fallout of her twin's escapades. This time she finds herself chained to a gargoyle that her sister cursed to remain in stone a century ago. But now, something magical is happening and the curse seems to be broken...for now. The gargoyle is sure to want revenge on Emma, whom he believes cursed him, but he finds himself inexplicably attracted to her.

Cian, the gargoyle that has been in stone form for the past century believes that his attraction to Emma is a result of an enchantment spell that she has cast on him in order to save her own skin. But his cat believes she is actually his mate. When Emma escapes from Cian before he can figure out how to deal with her, he vows to track her down one way or another. But once he catches up with her he finds her on the hunt for her sister and in a whole heap of trouble herself. Emma strikes up a bargain with Cian to find her sister, one that could potentially break her heart since she is falling for the sexy shifter.

Primal Pleasure starts out strong and as always with a Somers book, very, very sexy. Cian has been in stone form for a hundred years but now that the curse is lifted his lust for Emma overrides his desire for revenge. He is instantly protective over the sexy sorceress even though he assumes his attraction is the result of an enchantment spell. But his attraction to her rides him so hard, he doesn't fight it much. He wants Emma and even though she knows she's flirting with some serious danger, Emma is extremely attracted to Cian as well.

Somewhere in the middle of the book the story begins to sag a little. Not to the point where I was bored, not at all, but I felt that the hunt for the sister was drawn out a little and the lack of the presence of the villain until very late in the book caused the pace to slow a little too much. All of the main action and big revelations happen fairly late in the story so the only real danger for the protagonists seemed to come from each other.

Cian and Emma make a great couple and their chemistry is so very sexy. I liked that even though both had reason to avoid falling for the other they didn't waste a huge amount of time resisting each other. The loving relationship does not come easy for them since they have some things to overcome but I liked that they both found each other so appealing even when they shouldn't.

I've read all three books in Sydney Somers' Pendragon Gargoyle series and while I enjoyed Primal Pleasure very much, it was not my favorite in the series. However, I can certainly say it is still a recommended read. Sydney Somers writes love stories with a sexy edge that keeps me coming back for more. Certain revelations near the end of Primal Pleasure leave me eagerly anticipating a second chances romance.

The third book in the Pendragon Gargoyles series is another hit. This book is Cian and Emma's story.

Cian was locked in stone for a century due to Emma's twin sister. Cian get's released from the stone due to Emma (they are mates). Neither Emma or Cian realize they are mated, they think her sister enchanted him and that is why he want's Emma. Cian also doesn't realize that Emma is not the one who cast him in stone for a century.

Emma has been promised to a powerful sorcerer, but Emma doesn't want him.

This was a great story that makes it hard to wait for the next one in this amazing series!

concise & clear

This statistics book got me through the muddiness that was my Statistics lectures. When you can't understand the words coming out of your professor's mouth, dive into this book for clarification. It's strategic, using efficient stages to set up your knowledge base for the next piece of statistical information. I'd never taken a statistics class before, and I can't claim to be brilliant at math, but this book helped me pass my class with an "A". (So did my TA tutor, god bless him.)

Book is great... Condition sucks

The book is great for learning statistics on your own. I would give it 5 stars but the used book that I bought came with over half of the binding separated. Day one of opening the book the binding completely separated from the spine and now I cannot even do the buy back program with the book. I am extremely irritated that I paid $152 for a used book that I cannot even sell back.
