good information, but didn't work for our cat
By Cat in the hat
The book and DVD provide a lot of great information that owners should think about while toilet training their cats (e.g., nutrition, hydration, etc), in addition to some thoughtful advice for how to "troubleshoot" when your cat doesn't catch on as you'd hoped. However, after over 3 months the suggested methods have not worked for us.
The roasting pan, while a cost-effective option, was just too flimsy towards the end of training when the transition for the cat is the most important (and difficult), and no amount of duct tape (a quick fix suggested by the author) was going to fix an increasingly flimsy pan. Our cat felt pretty insecure when the pan gave under her weight (even if only a little bit), and this was a real hurdle to progress.
In addition, if you find you need to back track to allow more time for your cat to adjust to a new step in training, the roasting pan method does not easily allow for that (especially with all the duct tape you have to use to get the pan to stay together). You end up having to buy another pan and cutting that one up.
Lastly, it's pretty unpleasant to continually take out a grimy, flimsy roasting pan to cut away thin metal, peel it back, and apply more tape (eww..).
At less than half the price of other kits out there, if methods described in this book work for you, you're lucky! Unfortunately for us, we're resorting to the ~$60 alternatives because they provide a much sturdier plastic that seems to be necessary in our case. One positive about having a durable plastic kit--when we relocate to another home or get another cat in the future, it's reusable. I would really hate to go back to cutting up roasting pans if we had to toilet train our cat again in a new house (which the author suggests is highly likely, but supposedly much easier the second time around).
I suggest doing some internet research before deciding to purchase. Much of the good information conveniently compiled in the book (well, except for details on the roasting pan) are available for free in various places online. If you do purchase this book and are unsatisfied, I believe you can return it for a full refund (see the official website).
Good luck!

Effective Training Tool
By Jonathan Hortemiller
I don't even remember how I stumbled across this book, but I whimsically decided to give it a try. My kitten had already made the change to flushable litter, but I thought having a toilet trained cat would be cheaper and more convenient. After all, who REALLY likes scooping nasty litter? Nobody, I would imagine. My spouse and I started training Mercedes, our kitty, when she turned 6 months old. One month later, we are now in the very final stages of training. This morning we took the roasting pan out of the toilet completely, and so far Mercedes has been successfully using the toilet. We'll see how she does for the rest of this week!
Obviously every one is going to have varying results with training, depending on their cats. We've followed mostly all of the recommendations and instructions in the book, and it seems like our kitten will be a success story. But you really do have to be patient and smart about toilet training your cat... I bought this book despite some of the bad reviews, and I would highly recommend it. If you're contemplating this purchase but are hesitating because some of the bad reviews, let me give you some advice.
Some of the reviews mentioned that the roasting pan is too flimsy for their cats to comfortably use during the later stages of training. Our kitty is still pretty small because she is so young, but even she seemed to be a little hesitant to step in the pan as training progressed. The great thing about these pans? They come in packs of more than one. So DOUBLE UP. It's not too much more difficult to cut through two pans rather than one, and this makes the set up MUCH more secure. Duct tape any jagged edges to keep kitty from getting poked unnecessarily (I always had to to duct tape the two layers of the litter dam together).
This process does take time... So BE PATIENT. Mercedes has had four accidents during her month of training: two wet ones and two chunky ones. When possible, follow the author's instructions for properly correcting accidents and slow down the pace of the training a bit!! This really is a big help. Another HUGE help is for you to actually be around and catch your kitty in the act of good behaviors (aka using the toilet setup at each stage). Give her lots of praise and treats for a job well done. If you have a good friendship with your cat, he/she will want to please you, so this is a highly imperative part of the training.
The only problem we have now is that Mercedes still loves to play in the toilet water. So if she does her business at night, we aren't awake to call her away from the toilet to flush before she can play in it. I'm hoping she grows out of this... But I can't blame my kitty's tendencies on this author, because he can't "cure" her curious and playful nature. The method in this book worked for our cat, and the book is WAY cheaper than any of the premade kits I've seen online. Definitely glad I tried it!
***UPDATE 4/16/13***
I think our kitty is now fully potty trained. I originally wrote the review a while back, and then we took a break from potty training during the holiday season due to travel, moving, and frustration with our little fuzzy animal. After we took the pan out, she refused to go in the toilet and began going in other places. So we gave her litterbox back. We resumed training a couple months later after moving. The second training process was MUCH easier, because she remembered what to do. We also bought a soft padded toilet seat, which definitely helped.
To make a long story short, our kitten knows how to use the toilet with no pan at all and is comfortable with it. I think her personality made training more difficult than it had to be (I'm 99% sure she will only poop/pee in the living room if she is unhappy with us for leaving her home alone too long or not waking up on time to feed her). But she has not had an accident in over a week. Hooray! We still put her in the bathroom while we are gone to avoid accidents, and we will continue to do this until she earns the privilege to stay out.
Over all? Great book, effective method. Stubborn cats like ours may prove to make training more difficult!

Very easy to read book and his method is amazing
By Kat Ng
It works! I read the book the first day I had it, and be able to memorize everything from then, Very easy to read book and his method is amazing. He recommends we started this on our cat around 6 months old or so, but I tried this on my 3.5 months kitten and so far it works very well. The hardest part to me is how to manage to make our cat gets used to doing number 1/2 with water exposed underneath. I had to poke a tiny pencil hole because he refused to do it for the very first time we started to cut the pan. But after this step it's very easy to get him adapt. It's been 1.5 months and I'm at 3/4-cut-off-pan, I wanna take it slowly in order to not make my kitten anxious. So far so good.
