About the Author
Since 1968, Bastian Clev� has produced more than eighty full-length and short films in the United States and Germany and has won numerous awards for his work. He is Professor at the Film Production Studies Department at the Filmakademie Baden-Wurttemberg near Stuttgart, and lectures on filmmaking throughout North America, Europe, southern Asia, and Australia. Less Than What I Would Have Expected from Focal Press

I received a review copy for a film class that I help teach. In reading through the first few chapters, I noticed it has a rather casual, slapdash style that is all too common in many recent film how-to texts.

Focal Press has slipped in recent years, especially when it comes to their editions from overseas. It would seem that the cachet of having a foreign author is authority enough to justify the publication of a particular book.

I stopped reading when I came to the paragraph where the author states, to paraphrase, "Sometimes the screenwriter neglects to number his / her scenes due to laziness and the production manager has to do it for him." ( With no explanation of the "spec script" rules of format vs. "production scripts." It was at this point I became convinced of the author's lack of understanding of the production management process.

The best book out there for developing a shooting schedule.

I took Production Management in film school and this book blows away what we used as our textbook. It will definitely steer you to getting things done in a professional manner, whether it is managing locations or developing a shooting schedule. This is the one book you need to make sure everything runs smoothly.

This is an overview at best.

I have purchased (and immediately returned, after thumbing through) this book, as after a couple of decades in the business I am now moving up to management. This book might be a useful read for a complete neophyte, or a student, perhaps it even "blows away" other school type textbooks on the subject as the previus reviewer suggested. For a professional, it is of little use. It touches on all subjects associated with production, but none of them are treated with sufficient depth. One thing is certain: you will definitely not be an well informed production manager if that is all you will ever read to get ready for that particular challenge, nor will you be ready to go out there, and pass yourself off as a pro..

Thich Nhat Hanh's writing is deceptive in its subtlety. He'll go on and on with stories about tree-hugging or metaphors involving raw potatoes; he'll tell you how to eat mindfully, even how to breathe and walk; he'll suggest looking closely at a flower and to see the sun as your heart. As the Zen teacher Richard Baker commented, however, Nhat Hanh is "a cross between a cloud, a snail, and piece of heavy machinery." Practical and Inspirational

There's probably not much more to say about Vietnamese Buddhist monk "Boddhisatva" Thich Nhat Hanh than has already been written. I first encountered him in "The Raft Is Not The Shore". an enlightening dialogue between Hanh and Jesuit priest/poet/ activist, Father Daniel Berrigan. Perhaps no one (even the Dalai Lama) has illustrated so beautifully what it means to be *present* for those in daily life; to celebrate the here and now, as what it really is: all we have. His emphasis on "Conscious Breathing" or mindfulness is what comprises the true substance of the book. How many of us wander through life quietly agitated, caught in the frenetic hustle and bustle, never aware of how we breathe (and by extension, how we actually feel) ?

Hanh's insistence that we do so, and thereby "return to ourselves" is the real value of his work, particularly for those of us prone to angst, or it's less sexy name, anxiety, his work can improve our lives.

Recommended to those of any spirituality.

AMAZING

Peace is Every Step has helped many of my friends and family members get through rough (or even smooth!) times in their lives. This book is a must-have if you are going through any kind of stressful situation or you are just looking for simple ways to live mindfully. It is organized in very short chapters which are perfect if you want to read one quick chapter a day and then think on it. The messages are easy to understand and provide such accessible wisdom compared to other books of this nature which can be ponderous, new-agey, or overly complicated. My life is better since this book came into my life, and I will never be without a copy.

A must read inspiring book

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was forced to leave Vietnam during the Vietnam War because of his efforts for peace. He has subsequently lived in France in a retreat known as Plum Village where he continues to write and work for a more peaceful and harmonious world. He has written some 75 books, including Peace is Every Step. In this short (134 pages) work he emphasizes the importance of meditation and describes various ways to meditate. He also focuses on the idea that we are all connected. He says, for example, look at a single sheet of paper. In it you will see the tree it came from, the sun, soil and water that nourished it, the person who cut it down, his family and ultimately yourself. Another theme is that we need to go deep within ourselves to understand our feelings, especially our negative ones. We should look at anger, for example, directly and objectively and not as a result of someone else’s behavior. In this way we can learn how to deal with our anger and channel our feelings in a more positive way. Peace, he says, is in everything we do. The problem in America and Europe is a dualism that puts things and people in opposition to each other. It is only when we see the world as “interbeing,” as interconnected, that we can truly find peace. The book also contains a number of poems and a list of 14 things that you can do to put love into action.

I find this book to be greatly inspiring. As someone who has worked for peace much of my adult life and now feels anger and disappointment at a world that is not at peace, it has great meaning for me. I suggest that you not only read it, but also keep it with you throughout the day so that you can be continually inspired by it.

Not sure how to rate this one

It is a very rare occurrence that I have such a powerful negative reaction to one of the MC’s within a couple of chapters.

Hugh is a premier lion who at over 100 years old has too much power to exist without a siphon lion. For a siphon to carry the premier’s power he must remain close to the premier at all times. Siphons are so rare that only 1 in 100 premiers ever get one, so you would think that they would be a highly valued and regarded member of the pride. Not in this pride.

When we first meet Hugh he is having an orgy with 4 other members of his pride, when all of a sudden he starts feeling over full from all of his power. Realising that something has happened to his siphon of 10 years, the other members of the orgy investigate to find that the siphon has tried to hang himself.

Hugh’s first reaction to this is “why did you try and kill me and destroy the pride” (I find destroying the pride laughable, but I will come back to that later). Yeap the big JERK only wonders about himself. Not once did he wonder, what had made the siphon want to kill himself? What could have been so bad in his life that that was the only option? Nope it was all about him and his precious pride. Now that Hugh’s life is in danger, from the one actually keeping him alive, Hugh actually starts talking to the siphon and more information comes out. Now these guys have been together for 10 years, in that 10 years Hugh has NEVER spoken to the Siphon, in fact he doesn’t even know that the Siphon doesn’t have a name. At 26 years old he has never been named and is always referred to as “The Siphon”. Now Hugh doesn’t think this is a big deal as he is the Siphon so why does he need a name and quickly throws out a name for him. Here we have Johnnie. At this point Hugh still can’t understand why Johnnie has tried to kill himself countless times and is horrified to hear that he has tried for nearly all of their 10 years together.

See the part I find appalling is that not only Hugh has never spoken to Johnnie, not one member of the 1000 plus (actually I think it was closer to 2000) pride has ever acknowledged or spoken to the siphon in 10 years. Here is Johnnie, the one person keeping their Premier alive, who should be the most valued member of their pride and he is worse than mud on their boots, he is invisible to everyone. No wonder Johnnie did what he did, I’d want to escape an eternity of being nothing to these people as well. There is a lot of talk during this book that a lion can’t live without a pride. This is hilarious because Johnnie has been living his entire life without a pride. He may be classified loosely as part of the pride but he was never treated as a member of this pride.

Johnnie is such a sweet character. Born as a siphon he never had a chance. He was always going to be a tool, for his home pride and the Premier who he would eventually end up with. I found it devastating that in 10 years not one person had ever acknowledged him or spoken to him. He escaped into books. He knew instinctively what his relationship was meant to be with the Premier, in fact he was looking forward to being with the Premier and when that was denied to him, he went into a deep depression that no one was aware of. Once he was out of that depression we started seeing things from his POV. He general happiness at Hugh actually seeing him was beautiful and yet painful.

Johnnie should have been the most important member of the pride to Hugh, and when he finally pulls his head out of his own butt, he finally starts to realise this, but it was too little too late for me, the damage had already been done in the first few chapters. Hugh never really had to grovel, he apologised to Johnnie, but never really had to go out of his way to make things better, all he did was take notice and talk to Johnnie.

The pride was never taken to account either for their treatment of Johnnie. The general reason for this was that Hugh being Premier had to be considered by the rest of the Pride as flawless and couldn’t be seen as being either unsure or making mistakes. This is a CROCK, everyone in that pride should have been taken to task for their treatment of Johnnie. Yes Hugh was to blame but so was everyone else who ignored him

I’ve given this one 2.5 stars, because the author should get credit for making me feel so passionately about Johnnie’s treatment that I hated Hugh and the pride from the first 4 chapters. Unfortunately the author did such a good job that he never recovered in my eyes.

I am very impressed with the world build in this first book of a new series, it didn’t over shadow the storyline and plot which often happens with new series. The storyline was really strong from the very beginning. I was instantly hooked by the end of chapter one, I didn’t want to put the book down. I needed to know more about the Siphon
Hugh is strong Premier lion shifter, his power is stronger than he can handle alone, he needs a Siphon to hold his power.
Johnnie is Hugh’s Siphon, he feels so alone, unloved and very unwanted from being a small child. The two need to be together to survive, they learn how to be at full strength together, everything is so much easier when they work together.
I felt Johnnies pain, the poor love had no one and the one he needed didn’t even see him. There is a nice slow build up, everything fits perfectly making the book a very easy read. When Hugh and Johnnie realise their true connection the sex is very hot and steamy. It was very interesting following the two on the journey of their lives and watching everything unfold.
There is no insta love or mate bound which makes this shifter book very different from anything I have read in the past, making it a refreshing read
Overall an impressive first book in a new series. I am looking forward to reading book 2 in the future.
I would highly recommend the book to those who love a good shifter story…..

Creative Look at a Pride of Lions

A lot of interesting themes crop up in this story and it's written with a lot of imagination and creativity. I read so many shifter type stories that it's always fun with an author finds a new slant.

The setting is this is a successful, healthy, peaceful pride of lions -- Made possible by a Premier lion named Hugh. He is a black lion with black eyes and the coloring is skin deep - he's black in human form. Unusual. And that is up front on the cover although I do have to say that looked like an ape walking with that lion on the bottom half. . . . I was thinking Rafiki and Simba in the Lion King. Anyway, Hugh is large, powerful, fast, and his only weakness is his siphon, the even rarer lion that can hold a premier's power. Due to each other being such rare lions, not much is known, and no basis to fall back on. Until this relationship takes off.

Yes there are problems and misunderstandings. It's a symbolic relationship that's under constant pressure with the pride, exlpectations, needs, ideas, and wants. I enjoyed reading about the character growth, how honest they were with each other, that they would listen, learn, and adapt. . . . Well, more than adapt. They can become what true mates are. It's a process and as rare as they both are.

I've read more than one story on clueless men. Yes, it happens here. And then there's the whole romance from a lion who has no idea what love is and comparing passion to a well cooked steak. Yum. It just makes the heart go pitter patter but. .. . When you think of lions and their hunger and food, the comparison was . . . well done.

I am hoping to see a continuation of these two in the next story - How they influence other prides, continuing to learn and love each other. A really wonderful story about valuing those around you with fresh eyes. Not taking loved ones for granted. - Dan's Wife

About the Author

For his lifelong work in bioremediation and in the application of molecular methods to microbial ecology, Dr. Ronald Atlas received the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) award in Applied and Environmental Sciences. He chairs the ASM's Public and Scientific Affairs Board Environment Committee and is frequently asked to advise the government on related matters. Dr. Atlas is also a professor of biology at the University of Louisville where he teaches undergraduate and graduate microbiology courses.

Dr. Richard Bartha has conducted research for over 30 years on the environmental fate of manmade synthetic chemicals, on methods ofbiodegradability testing, and on the bioremediation of soil-, water-, andairborne pollutants. Dr. Bartha has authored or co-authored 150 scientificarticles in his outlined research field. As a professor at Rutgers University, he teaches courses on microbiological and ecological topics. He has been elected Fellow of the American Society for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Microbiology.

About the Author
Marianne Woodside, Professor Emerita, is affiliated with the Human Services, Mental Health Counseling, and Counselor Education programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has taught introduction to human services, case management, methods of helping, and foundations of counselor education, and supervises practicum and internship. Her primary research interests are international human services, human service education, and case management. Dr. Woodside has served on the editorial boards for Journal of Human Service Education, American Association for Counseling and Development Journal, and Tennessee Counseling Journal. Additionally, she served as vice-president of regional development and secretary of the National Organization for Human Services Education. Dr. Woodside has published a wide range of journal articles and has an extensive record of presentations at national and international meetings. Her many awards include the Distinguished Recognition Award from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, the Professional Development Research Award from the National Organization for Human Services Education, the Helen B. Watson Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and the Educator's Hall of Honor Award. It is set up in easily outlined chapters

This is a required textbook for my class. It is set up in easily outlined chapters. Easy to read, easy to learn the material.

COURSE MATE PROS: The online code is worth it. Online gives you an eBook, that can be highlighted, or copied onto note cards. (for online study) There's an online audio version if you want to listen on the way to class.

The COURSE MATE DRAWBACK; Avoid the crosswords puzzles! They randomly put a blank square at the end of the word, and empty spaces between words, if it is a two or three word answer. Do the number of squares in no way equals the number of letters in the word! Sometimes intersecting words will cross at a blank square too.
