Splash of Color is a Splash of Fun and Relaxation

The quality and awesomeness of this book can't be conveyed in pictures. The illustrations are luxuriously printed, the watercolor paper is substantial (feels similar to Arches watercolor paper) and the back of the book is firm and sturdy, so you can prop the book on your lap if you want. Splash of Color feels special.

You don't have to paint or color much to feel like you've created an original work of art. My 5-year old son and I zenned out with this book. He picked the cactus illustration, which he colored with markers in every color of the rainbow and then drew his own desert characters on the side of the page. This book served as a wonderful creative prompt for him. You can frame your work, cut and fold the finished work to use as blank cards, use a craft punch to create gift tags, etc. Even after you've enjoyed the coloring part, there are endless ideas for your finished pieces. I'm so pleased that I purchased two of these books...one for my family and one as a birthday gift.

I have ordered several of these as gifts and of course for myself. I think they are such a wonderful hostess gift especially if you pair with the watercolor pencils the artist also designed the box of. Such a nice gift. The artwork is so well done and I have been loving using both watercolor pencil and actual watercolor paint with it. The quality is just perfection. A must buy.

Annie Brock is a former high school English teacher and middle and high school library media specialist. She currently works as a freelance writer and educational technology consultant. Annie has a degree in journalism from Kansas State University, and earned her secondary English education credentials from Washburn University. She previously authored Introduction to Google Classroom.

Heather Hundley is an elementary educator with 12 years of teaching experience. She currently serves as a kindergarten teacher in Kansas. Heather has an elementary education degree from Washburn University and master’s degrees in education and in school leadership from Baker University. She has served as a supervisor for pre-service teachers and as a guest lecturer with Washburn University. I like how this book is organized monthly

The Growth Mindset concept is really taking off in education. I like how this book is organized monthly, with very approachable chunks. So many educational texts are completely overwhelming. I would like to see an online component that had editable versions of some of the paperwork they describe. I have found it to be time consuming to create or find these documents and the book is too small to just scan and print. I'm very excited to see how my year goes using this book, and if I get the results I hope for I will definitely be using it again.

A very well WRITEN book.
I bought a paper back copy of this book 2002 and it has always inspired me greatly. Now IAM looking foe a kindled edition but you do not seem to have it on kindle. I encourage to put it on kindle many who cannot access it in other print form can obtain it on kindle. It is also a very good teaching tool for family, small Christian groups and indeed in church, because it provides for an in depth understanding of one self as well as warns you of the ares you must guard against satan's whiles and SATAN'S lies.. VERY GOOD WORK MAC. GOD BLESS YOU WHERE EVER YOU ARE.

Pastor Mac Hammond entreats us all to fight back against deception with knowledge! Jesus said of the devil" He's a liar and a thief and a murderer and has been since the very beginning". Deception is the very biggest tool the devil has used against all mankind since the Garden of Eden. Pastor Mac exposes the ruses of satan where by he would get us to turn our backs upon God. If satan can not seduce us away from God and knowing about Him he would offend us away (by using others). Pastor Mac claims if satan can not deceive us he can not defeat us! This book is valuable insight for the end of days spirit warrior who would battle evil.

About the Author
Dr. Amy J. L. Baker is director of research at the Vincent J. Fontana Center for Child protection of the New York Foundling. She earned her doctorate in Developmental Psychology from Teachers College of Columbia University in 1989. She has experience with both quantitative as well as qualitative research methodologies and has taught research methodology at both the undergraduate as well as graduate levels at both Columbia and Fordham University. In addition to Adult Children of Parental Alienation Syndrome published by W. W. Norton, Dr. Baker is the first author of a text book on child welfare research methods published by Columbia University Press. She is also the author or co-author of 50 academic articles. She has published in scientific peer-reviewed journals including Early Childhood Education Quarterly, Child Welfare, Social Work Research, Applied Behavioral Sciences Review, International Journal of Social Work, Child and Adolescent Social Work, The Elementary School Journal, and the Macmillan Psychology Reference Series on Child Development. Areas of research expertise include parent-child attachment, early intervention, parent involvement, mental health of youth, and child welfare. She lives in Teaneck New Jersey and is the mother of 21-year-old and 4-year-old daughters.

A "Must Read" for All Parties Victimized by PAS (and the Professionals Who Work with Them)

I'm the "targeted parent" 10 years into a PAS situation. My experience in the late 90s was that the mental health and legal professions were naive at best, dismissive at worst, about parental alienation and its devastating effects on both the child and the targeted parent. Using the experience of 40 interviewees, Dr. Baker describes the syndrome with chilling accuracy. I was particularly interested in the fact that she told the stories of the adult children, as it provided an opportunity to experience my family from my alienated child's perspective rather than my own heartbreak. I think Dr. Baker made some critical points that deserve books of their own: the risk that the alienated child will in turn become manipulative, the higher risk of adult depresssion, the never-ending nature of the targeted parent's grief, and others. The book offers practical suggestions for both the professionals that see PAS (or should see PAS, but don't know what it looks like) and for the victims. This book has earned a place in my permanent library and ought to be required reading for every family practice attorney, family court judge, MFC, LCSW, child psychologist, and family court special master. As a follow-up volume, I'd like to see Dr. Baker address the long-term experience of those she DIDN'T interview: What happens to the adult children who stay alienated?

Still Hoping Dad

As a targeted father, I have been waiting for a book like this to be published for the past 5 years. Amy Baker writes about MY life and the frustration I feel at being victimized by an alienating ex-wife that the court system not only refuses to sanction but empowers through its lack of understanding of this syndrome. Amy Baker has described the behaviors that my son exhibits as though she is living inside my home. Through Dr. Baker's astute insight, I am reminded to stay in the struggle, as hard as it is at times, and to give my son unconditional love and understanding, especially when he is least deserving of it, for he is the real victim! Books like Dr. Baker's give hope that one day this syndrome will be understood well enough to be dealt with approriately in the court system so as to insure that all children have the right to a relationship with both parents. For if they don't,the results as indicated in Dr. Baker's book, are tragic. Thank you for giving words to such a big part of my life that is absolutely indescribable!

Excellent book/Study

As a targeted parent whose daughter has not spoken with him for the last 5 years, Amy Baker's book, "Adult Children of Parental Alienation Syndrome: Breaking the Ties that Bind" has been the most informational and encouraging book I've read on the P.A.S. topic so far.

The reason is simple: This book is comprised of interviews of the KIDS (now adults) who were poisoned, not the parents who were either the alienator or target.

It was astonishing to read what these people, who as children were manipulated into hating one of their parents, had to say once they "woke up".

Without going into all of the results, let me mention the two most important lessons I learned from these kids:

1. The average length of time it took these kids to "wake up" was 20 years. Yikes! But, at least they woke up.
2. The overwhelming majority had wished the targeted parent tried harder to re-develop the relationship, regardless of how much they were "hated".

These two revelations are telling me: "Don't ever give up. Don't ever stop trying".

Thanks to Amy for doing this study and writing this book. It could prove to be the most important document I will see until I eventually reunite with my daughter.

short but thorough

This is an impressive pocket resource for Buddhism. Unlike some earlier reviewers, I did read it from cover to cover, and am very impressed. Powers' explanations of basic Buddhist concepts is very clear and straightforward. Of course in a work like this he had to be selective, but the range of entries is staggering, with good choices of what to include as most representative/interesting. He covers all the main Buddhist traditions, including modern western Buddhist movements. My only complaints are that he puts disproportionate stress on the twentieth century and on Tibetan Buddhism. His coverage of southeast Asia and Sri Lanka is very light. But it's definitely a VERY good reference work for anyone interested in Buddhism.

A Little Research Would Go A Long Way

I picked this book up in the bookstore and read the selections dealing with Nichiren Buddhism. They focus entirely on Soka Gakka and the Nichiren Shoshu as if they were the only two schools of Nichiren Buddhism. The book does not even mention the mainstream school of Nichiren Buddhism in Japan, the Nichiren Shu, or the other legitimate Nichiren Buddhist sects like the Kempon Hokke Shu, the Honmon Butsuryu Shu or others. It does not mention that in Japan the Soka Gakkai is regarded as a cult, and the Nichiren Shoshu is a very tiny fringe sect that is not really regarded as Buddhist even by the mainstream Nichiren groups. The discussions of the Gohonzon and Odaimoku are likewise very shallow and do not hint at the deep spirituality of Nichiren Buddhism. As one of the first ministers-in-training with the Nichiren Shu, I was very disappointed to see this. John Powers needs to talk to Professor Jacqueline Stone of Princeton U. before he writes another word about Nichiren Buddhism. If the other entries of this volume show the same lack of research and care then this book deserves negative stars. I will leave that for members of other schools of Buddhism to decide.

Thomas M. Disch is one of the overlooked masters of science fiction, and Camp Concentration is one of his finest novels. The unlikely hero of this piece is Louis Sacchetti, an overweight poet who's serving a five-year prison term for being a "conchie," or conscientious objector, to the ongoing war being fought by the United States. Three months into his sentence, Sacchetti is mysteriously taken from prison and brought to Camp Archimedes, an underground compound run by General Humphrey Haast. This is the so-called "camp concentration" of the book's title, a strange oubliette where inmates are given a drug that will raise their intelligence to astounding levels, though it will also kill them in a matter of months.

Sacchetti's job is to chronicle the goings-on at Archimedes in a daily journal that is sent to Haast and other select members of the project. Through his writings, readers get to know the various characters that inhabit the camp, geniuses whose intellectual fires burn brightly even while their bodies slowly go cold. Although these latter-day Einsteins are supposed to be thinking up new ways of killing the enemy, most of the inmates are instead focusing their studies on alchemy, which Haast hopes will allow them to discover the secret of immortality.

Camp Concentration is one of those SF books that falls squarely into the "literature" category both for the eloquence of Disch's writing and the timelessness of his ruminations on life and war. This is a thoughtful novel that offers insights into human existence, and it will likely stay with readers long after they have turned the last page. Ursula K. Le Guin summed up the book best in her cover blurb, which says simply: "It is a work of art, and if you read it, you will be changed." --Craig E. Engler

A fascinating premise, but a narrative that bogs down

Thomas Disch has written an unusual and nightmarish tale of war, disease, and government skullduggery that makes for fascinating reading-- most of the way through. It is frightening but true that his premise that the government might secretly develop and test a disease organism that augments intelligence but then kills seems more credible today than it did when he wrote the story decades ago.
However, as the story develops, Disch's narrative slips further and further into a succession of obscure literary, philosophical, and religious allusions that only those steeped deeply in arcane intellectual works will understand, let alone appreciate. There are lengthy passages that I found frustratingly obscure, and overall, I felt that in the last part of the novel the work loses its original sharp edge and intensity. Perhaps for the chosen few with the proper intellectual pedigree to connect with the veritable cavalcade of allusions, quotations, and metaphors, the work will seem far more meaningful. For the rest of us, it ends up being an interesting but in some ways unsatisfying read.

Big Ambitions, Partly Achieved

It's evident that Disch set out with the goal in mind of writing a more "literary" sort of science fiction novel than was or is prevalent in the genre. He gets about 4/5s of the way there, actually.

Disch's verbal abilities and his mental dexterity are commendable, and are well displayed here. He is less successful at constructing plot intricacies, character development, and dramatic structure. Though it ties in with the plot, Disch's Pynchonesque linguistic display, which reaches a crescendo in the early part of Book Two, come off as the product of a young writer having fun with a highlighter and an unabridged OED.
It's interesting that this novel was published about half a year after Daniel Keyes came out with a very similar book later adapted into a play and then a movie . The idea had been around since Keyes first wrote the novella version in 1959. The idea is basically the same. Scientists come up with a formula that makes brain processes accelerate, the subjects become brilliant for a while and then the unforeseen consequences set in. Charly returns to his mentally retarded state, Sacchetti lapses into the final stages of a degenerative disease (syphilis).
Disch does introduce some interesting ideas along the way, however. The effect of syphilis, in particular,on the artistic mind, has long been a subject of conjecture. Though some arguments are a lot shakier (Beethoven) than others (de Mauppassant, Nietszche), the subject is definitely open to debate. Disch works such speculation into his story quite effectively. There is also the matter of the way in which the agent (The Palladine) is spread through the surface population (by sexual means) by a rebellious researcher. It does rather spookily prefigure the coming aids epidemic, and probably had some influence on later novelists such as Crichton and King.
There is enough talent, brains and imagination on display here to appeal to "general" readers as well as Sci-Fi aficionados. It's at times intentionally obfuscating, but that's confined to a relatively brief section as the narrator undergoes a mental breakdown. The rest is highly readable. I will definitely seek out more works by the author.

Not as good as The Trailer!

Ever see a trailer for a movie ,see the film and wish it were more like the trailer. This is one of those. The blurb on the above paperback really grabbed me, so i bought the book. The book is pretty good but it IS weird .The whole thing is mainly epistolic( told in the form of letters or in this case diary entries )and breaks down the middle section when he is in a state of syphilitic dementia.In fact, it so completely captured his rambling dementia that I basically had skip over that part. On balance though, I liked it ;the ending redeemed the craziness and in fact expalined it.
