Turpentine as Medicine? Yes!

For the past 7 years I have transitioned to live a more wholesome and natural life. I am always on the look out for natural remedies and came upon this book. I had never heard of turpentine as medicine before, only as paint thinner or something that is really bad for you. Well, I am really glad I picked this book up. The author does a great job of setting up foundational knowledge about turpentine as medicine, talking about its history and explaining how it went from medicinal use for thousands of years to chemical use in modern times. The writing is excellent and there are a lot of sources referenced. Overall, great introduction on Turpentine and Terpenic Oil.

I have not read this book but I'd like to refer a lot of you to where you'll get further information on dosages, diet and precautions. Check out Dr. Jennifer Daniels. She has a lot of free videos and literature on the web so that you can treat yourself. I've been using Turpentine with great success the past few months in treating candida.

Well written, but a little too grave for me

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- Some of the things that happen, even as early as the second chapter, shocked me, but not in a bad way. If I were to encounter such unusual occurrences in a contemporary romance, I'd probably roll my eyes and think, "yeah, right," but in the historical setting, I was able to suspend my doubts and enjoy the unexpectedness of the plot.
- There's immediate comfort (and later, real friendship) between Douglas and Warren. I enjoyed their quiet interactions, especially when compared to the artificiality and forced politeness of the scenes between Douglas and Mark.
- The characters are well-rounded and seem realistic. Douglas's innocence is, in my opinion, endearing without being too annoying, and all of the characters have squabbles like normal people but manage to resolve things without drowning the story in character-driven angst.
- Pearson does an excellent job of portraying a detailed view of London during the late 19th century.

CONS:
- Part of the story's appeal is that there's lots of uncertainty: riddles and vague comments and portentous occurrences. But I think maybe Pearson did TOO good a job of establishing ambiguity for me: I don't mind plot twists, but I like to know who the good guys are--at least the main ones--and I didn't know that in this book (at least not entirely) until very near the end.
- The entire book has a heavy, oppressive atmosphere. There's often a feeling of paranoia in historical books that deal with homosexuality because the lifestyle was, in many places, punishable by death. But often in fiction, those unpleasantries are glossed over--acknowledged, but then pushed aside with one excuse or another. That is not the case here: the inclusion of Oscar Wilde and his very real trial and punishment gives the whole book a somber feel.
- There's a description of rape that I found difficult to read. It's not detailed, granted, but I got the full weight of the psychological impact on the victim.

Overall comments: This book is full of lost loves and frightening noises in the night and questions about characters' loyalty, not to mention the constant weight of Oscar Wilde's ongoing trial for "gross indecency." It's certainly a good book, but I'd be lying if I said that I wholeheartedly enjoyed it.

Peeling Away the Layers

This delightful book is at the same time a mystery and a romance novel that contains some insightful social commentary and historical costume drama. I hope a good movie script writer generates a movie script for it, because I think it would make an excellent plot line for a movie. There are three main charactes: the main character, Douglas Shrove, owns a bookshop. Douglas is a gay man from an educated, aristocratic background living in London when homosexual behavior is a felony; in fact, the events of the story are contemporaneous with the Oscar Wilde trials at the end of the 19th century. Douglas is courted by two men: Mark Goldcrest, a fellow aristocrat, handsome and cultured, and Warren Scott, a painter who hides more class than he shows the world. Douglas has to deal with his own prejudices and uncover secrets that both Warren and Mark are hiding to sort out his feelings and find his own "happily ever after." The characters and plotline are credible, the tension level raised by the author is high, the twists and turns in the plot cover the reasons if not the final conclusion of the plot, the use of the Wilde trials to emphasize the social attitudes of the time is done well.

I have immensely enjoyed all three of Ms. Peason's novels of 19th century England, dealing with gay romance in an era when such romance was illegal and socially shameful to an extent far beyond what it is today. This novel is, if anything, even better than the first two. Her writing, characterizations and plotline are all better developed than in the first two, and I loved the first two! Can't wait for her future novels, if they are as well done as the first three and if they are also in a gay romance genre. If such is of interest to you, go for it.

Thin Mystery-Gay-Love-Story in 1890's London

"Helpless" by M. J. Pearson (a female) is a gay "romance" and sort of mystery story set in London during the time of the trials of Oscar Wilde --- mid-1890s.

There is a great absence of any story at all for approximately the first 60% of the book. The characters are uninteresting and weird, the events bland, and the hand-wringing stupendously boring. One must plod through much of the book before the tale gets the least bit interesting. It does pick up steam toward the end, but that's long after the reader (me, in this instance) has virtually lost all interest in and respect for each of the characters. For pages and pages and pages in the first 1/2 of the book, I kept hoping the story would begin.

The primary character is a real wimp, but he seems to find himself (way too late) and the courage of his convictions quite near the end, whereupon he becomes clear-headed, forceful and almost fearless - such an amazing transformation!

There are a few humorous paragraphs here and there in the book, often offered up by minor characters, and "servants" at that. It's the old British "upper class" snobbery and their view of society that we -- one more time -- have foisted upon us.

My major criticism of the book is my dismay at Pearson's 2010 perspective on 1890's gay rights put into the heads and words of those characters. There is no evidence in history that anyone in the 1890s viewed, spoke about, or advocated gay rights in the ways that some of the men in this story portray. Even the re-hashing of some of the testimony from the first Oscar Wilde trial is, though truncated, an incomplete and distorted summary of what transpired at Old Bailey.

Luckily I read the book on my Kindle and did not have to endure another hideous drawing on the cover of this book, a picture which does not reflect whatsoever its contents. Another lesson in the old saying: don't buy (this one especially) a book for its cover.

It's a mediocre story, though well-written. You could virtually skip the first three-fourths of the book and get to the solution of the mystery and the resolution of the main character's grief over the death of his partner and not miss much.

It's a 2.75, rounded up to a 3 for its more-or-less good writing.

Worth Memorising...

As a radiologist,I've rarely seen books that make the understanding of complicated points easier. This is an excellent text for the beginners in chest radiology to get a sense of approach to the problems. Although the classifications such as "Diffuse Coalescent" or "Multifocal Ill Defined Densities" may have low applicability in clinical practice, I still think that there seems no other way to approach to the enigma. One more problem is the difficulty to collect the knowledge about a spesific disease entity from different chapters as the book is based on differential diagnosis. Anyway, the book is worth memorising so there seems to be no problem. Thanks to Dr. Reed and to people who make our paths clean...

A good addition to your Chest radiology collection

A very nice systematic approach to chest radiology with good lists of differential diagnosis for many radiographic patterns. Also has some decent questions at the beginning of each chapter. However, the quality of the pictures could definitly be improved as some are very low resolution and make it difficult to find the disease process they are discussing. Should be used as an supplement to another chest radiology book.

Very good and systematic approach

I have read Felson's, Requisites, and Reed and I believe Reed to be the best of the bunch. It approaches chest interpretation in a systematic way and provides good differnetials with sound, yet short explainations. I recommend it in your library.

Now I understand how Einstein became Einstein

With so many Einstein books available, the choice is not obvious. This book explains how Einstein achieved the unimaginable, from his study of the work of others, to turbulence in his personal life, to his personality and character. Langerstrom avoids the many clich�s about Einstein's youth. He relies on established, provable truth, rather than on legend. He shows long years of preparation culminating in a sudden breakthrough. I was convinced. It's a book for those with a serious interest in Einstein, not for a casual reader. It's a book to be studied. There's arcane material about other scientists that some readers will likely skip over. Respectfully disagreeing with other Amazon reviewers, I found the writing to be clumsy, uneven in tone and usage. Langerstrom is not a journalist. He's a physicist, and a very good one.

A well written short introduction to the life of Albert Einstein. This book is an optional companion to a course on coursera. Seeing as it is rather short but packs a lot of content, I'd recommend this to anybody who is interested in one of the world's greatest minds.

A good book. Some of the tricks are common sense, but some of the tricks are really good. I enjoyed the author's comedy and would recommend this book to anyone in need of bettering their relationship.

Entertaining and fun

The book is a collection of various tidbits of psychological research and footnotes on where to go to get further information. Presented in a fun and light style it is easy to read and presents some interesting items. I don't really like the title because the items are not really cheap tricks. They are pieces of information collected from many sources that are at least educational in nature. There are parts that are very useful and may help each partner understand each other better. Would I use this to try to save a floundering relationship? No, but on the other hand, if you are trying to understand each other or get the other person's attention then it has several techniques for that purpose.
All in all it is fun and interesting and I enjoyed reading it. At least when it described some of the ways that men think it was dead on. Hopefully, it is just as accurate when describing the way that women think and you can gain some understanding of your spouse.

Kristofic, now a high-school teacher in Pennsylvania, shares his story of being transported at age seven from Pittsburgh to Ganado, Arizona, on the Navajo Indian Reservation by his mother, a nurse who had long nurtured her "Indian Dream." Jimmy is the only bilagaana, or white person, in his class, and he struggles with racial teasing from day one. By the third grade, he's learning to escape the daily taunting by helping his "Navajo enemies" with their schoolwork. Jimmy's new world is one of contrasts the violence and domestic abuse so common on the Rez occurring amidst its natural wonders, the prejudice he experiences before forming life-long friendships, the poverty-stricken homes in which food is always shared with a stranger. His mother marries a Navajo artist, and when Jim is a sophomore, the blended family moves to a small Utah town, where once again he feels like the "rootless transplant, the outsider," this time in a predominantly Anglo world. Entertaining memoir

I enjoyed this tender, well-written memoir very much. Mr. Kristofic's coming-of-age tale relates a world so many Anglos know too little about. Amazingly, the author manages to walk the line between being effusive in his appreciation for his adopted life and any potential criticism of the Navajo. Rather, he presents a clear-eyed portrait of a people and an environment he came to love. I was charmed by the episodes Kristofic chose to recount. From the opening pages, I liked the second-grade boy who is transplanted to the desert against his will. The boy, and the man he becomes, is keenly observant, self-effacing, and accepting. While there is nothing unique here (transferring into a new school, enduring the agonies of football as an undersized kid, figuring out who you are and wanting to be accepted at the same time), the author freshly presents these rites of passage. That they are set against a southwestern backdrop and peppered with fascinating historical facts about the Navajo only added to my enjoyment.

Mr. Kristofic's prose is crisp and sparse. Not a word is wasted. His ear for dialogue is spot on, whether it is capturing the verbal volley of a bully and his victim or teenagers out on a night of aggressive play or an exchange between Anglos and Navajo.

The author effectively represented the beauty of both the place in which he found himself, as well as its people. I was privileged to inhabit his world for the days I spent reading Navajos Wear Nikes. Even after having read so much of his life, I longed to know more, to know this person better. I also wanted to know more about the Navajo. This is an interesting and touching memoir.

Nicely crafted memoir

Having briefly lived on a Navajo reservation as a twenty-something I would like to comment on this book's resonance with a fellow biligaana. Since, however, few people have likely shared the experiences Mr. Kristofic writes about, I'm sure my comments about its authenticity will be of little use to many readers, so I will keep these comments brief. I would simply like to say that this book poignantly captures the naivete of a modern man brought up on a steady diet of cartoons and John Ford. Though it's a familiar (but never cliche)coming-of-age story line, NWN takes us through the pains of wanting to belong matched only by a striving to be unique. The chapter when young Jimmy finally goes to college and is surrounded by his own WASP heritage is a situation that should resonate with anyone who has wrestled with reconciling the truths and platitudes of their heritage.

Regardless of your own experience with N. Americans or life on the Rez, I would recommend this book because of its great pacing, subtle comedy and a light-handed treatment of learning how to grow up. I read this book quite quickly, due in large part because I didn't put it down. It was a different sort of page-turner in that I wasn't on edge, or worried for the characters. Instead, it was more like getting caught up in a grandfather's story where there is a great balance of details and story. By "subtle comedy," I mean that I wasn't laughing out loud but there was a tender treatment of childhood friendship and world view that causes one to appreciate such simplicity as well as laugh at the brashness of youth. I don't know if the author would think this is a compliment but his ability to authentically write children, their dialogue and their thought process, reminds me of King in Different Seasons and IT.

My reason for four stars is that I felt the last few chapters were exploring similar themes and I wasn't as "into" them. I can't put my finger on it but I just wasn't as engaged with the vignettes or the smattering of interesting facts. Although, as I said already, one of those last chapters was my favorite.

Navajos Wear Nikes

This book brought to life everything that I love about living on the rez. He truly captured the spirit of the Navajo people and our land. He brought to light many of the issues that face our people in a very funny, astute and emotional story. I believe he answered The Question in the only way possible, with stories, just like a Navajo should. I am definitely recommending this book to people who have asked me The Question.

Crowned and Dangerous

I have been a fan of Rhys Bowen’s books for a couple of years, and I always look forward to new releases. All of her books are lovely, but I must admit that her Royal Spyness series is my favorite. If you’re not familiar with this series, here’s a brief explanation: the books take place in1930s England, and Georgiana Rannoch is 35th in line for the throne. She is an astute young woman, and she often receives royal requests for help. Of course, one cannot refuse the Queen of England. Georgie has all sorts of adventures, and solves mysteries.

Crowned and Dangerous is the 10th book in the Royal Spyness series. When we last encountered our heroine Georgie, she was attending the wedding of her cousin Prince George to Princess Marina. As the story begins, she has been swept away by her enigmatic beau Darcy O’Mara, who after several years of casual dating, intends to take her to Gretna Green and marry her.

Alas, fate intervenes and Darcy sees a newspaper bearing grim tidings: his father, Lord Kilhenny has been arrested for the murder of the wealthy American man who bought the Kilhenny estate several years ago.

Darcy rushes off to his father’s side, and informs Georgie that she is to remain in England, and her involvement in the case would be too scandalous. Those familiar with the series will know that our Georgie is not easily deterred, and so she ventures over to Ireland, determined to stand by her beloved and to prove his father’s innocence.

The mystery portion of the book is rather interesting because Georgie and Darcy do not really have access to the crime scene. They have to rely on the facts of the case, and the prognosis seems rather grim since the accused claims he was drunk and does not really remember anything. Georgie doesn’t do nearly as much sleuthing in this book as she has done in the past, and she practically stumbles upon the solution through luck/fate.

Despite this, Crowned and Dangerous is a lovely book. Bowen devotes her time to building up Georgie’s world. Most of the book takes place in Ireland, but it was nice to receive updates (as it were) on the friends and family who have appeared in previous books. It was also quite lovely to meet some new characters, like Darcy’s Aunt Oona and Uncle Dooley, as well as the debonair Zou Zou. And of course, what Royal Spyness book would be complete without Georgie’s maid Queenie? She plays a more minor role than she has in the past, but she still manages to steal the show.

I would recommend Crowned and Dangerous. If you are new to the series, I recommend starting at the beginning and reading the books in order. This is a solid entry in the series, with some nice set-up for the next book. Although there is a murder to be solved, this is a light book infused with humor. Georgie is a delightful protagonist; her manners are impeccable, but she is kind to everyone, regardless of their social position. She’s clever, and she’s funny, and I always enjoy her adventures. Now that I have read the book, I suppose that I am going to have to re-read the rest of the series while waiting a year for Georgie’s next adventure!

Queenie needs to go!

I have to say that this installment just didn't hold my attention. Queenie needs to go...or I need to stop buying the books. She is a very annoying character. How many more times do we need to read about her inadequacies? As for Darcy and Georgie, either move them on in their relationship or end it. Ten books worth of "almost but not quite" is enough. I felt that the need to get all the regulars into the story and then introduction of so many new characters was taking space from the main story: getting Darcy and Georgie together. Dialog with the regulars has become repetitive over the last few books. As much as I have enjoyed the past books, I do know that I will not preorder the next book. Before I pay $13 for a Kindle ebook, I will download a sample to see if it is worth the price.

Still good, but.....

I truly love this series. It is one of the very few that I would buy in hardcover because I couldn't wait until the paperback came out. But to tell the truth, it's gotten a bit long in the tooth. There isn't much sleuthing, mostly running around from one scene to the next because that's what books do. It didn't feel well plotted. And through much of it things were blindingly obvious that the characters acted oblivious to. In the end there were a couple interesting plot twists, but too many strings were too conveniently tied up. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last. But maybe not. If there are more installments, I will happily snap them up. I hope the quality returns to it's previously high standard.
