As much as you want to know. Maybe more!

I bought this to research a family ship that was launched in this time period. If you are interested, really interested/ in the Clipper era, you are in for a treat. Deeply,deeply researched, with possibly more than you ever wanted to know, it will take several readings to digest. There was a tremendous effort put into this book.
I became depressed at times, every time I saw the phrases "Went missing"., "Around Cape Horn" , "Lost in typhoon","Burned to the waterline" and I saw them a lot. The Captain did the Horn six times, and his widow was still alive, living with us, when I was a little kid, but i had no idea it was that bad.
We think about "Romance of the beautiful Clipper, spanking along under an acre of sail", but when you get down and dirty with it, you'd drag me kicking and screaming into a fo'castle after reading this. This was a rare time in our History. Our clippers were beating the pants off merchantmen from other countries. It was like the '"Muscle Car" era. Merchantmen of other nations would reef up for the night, we'd put out the studding sails. The lives of most of the ships were not that long, with the sail they carried. Think about putting a Hemi in an Austin Healey sprite, and it's a pretty good analogy. Some of them were beaten like rented mules.

Simple strategies that work

In my opinion, the value of the book is not in quantity and complicated analogies. The value of the book to me was the fact that it has broken down the Ichimoku strategy into easy, applicable steps customized to individual traders (as oppose to a 1-size-fit all strategy that you normally see in other trading books)... and also the fact that if you use the strategy, it actually works :)

Not a book for those who are after quantity

The genius and value of this book is not because of the number of pages (it's only 100 pages) but because of the simplicity and accuracy of the strategy. Pay attention to the final Fibonacci-Ichimoku strategy based on your risk tolerance. The author does refer to her website quite often to provide other investment management tools to back up the Ichimoku strategy which can sometimes be annoying.

A quick and mostly painless read

This book fell into my hands when I was looking for a quick read while on travel. I only browsed the back cover and thought it might be interesting - which was a misunderstanding on my side that became clear already in the first chapter. First of all, shapeshifters really aren't my kind of thing even if they need more than a few seconds to change their appearance. The prehistoric introduction reads like an unsuccessful try at literature and gives away most of the details (or could-be-secrets) behind the aliens. There are some half-hearted tries to blend several war episodes with the story and set the stage for a twist in the end that really becomes very transparent already in the first half of the book. The aliens' motivations are barely beyond stereotypical, sometimes a little too obviously meant to be controversial when in fact they are not. The human side is even worse and borders on being embarrassing - one wants to suggest to move away from the ever-present war theme and spend a little more time on other aspects of human character. It's a short book though and the fast action carries it along too. I'll give Mr Haldeman an extra star for this one mainly because his "Marsbound" was infinitely worse and I still need to read the highly praised "Forever War."

A Love Story

There is a sub-genre of science fiction that I like to think of as the alien-encounter procedural. Among its most famous of members is Arthur C. Clarke's "Rendezvous with Rama". Humans meet a new species of alien and must figure out what procedures to follow to make some kind of contact. Emphasis is on the technology of contact, with suspense created by the unknown nature of the aliens. Often there is no emphasis on character development or illuminating human society by the strange circumstances. To maintain my interest the twists of the encounter or the solutions required must really be clever.

All this is by way of saying that when I encountered "Camouflage", I expected just such a story and had set my techno-bableometer to dampen. Boy, was I surprised!

Instead the story is told from the point of view of the alien and explores one of the most basic of literary questions, "What does it mean to be human?"

Joe Haldeman's writing is simple and direct and he does not search for colorful language. Instead, he weaves together three separate story lines, each with its own time scale, that come together in the finale. Occasionally you might think the author was moving into irrelevant areas but ultimately he brings the unities home. Moreover, at the same time as the main character is developing, Haldeman uses the device of the doppelganger, that is, a parallel personality, to contrast with the character of the hero. Moreover, he sets the story against an historical perspective of the last two thirds of the twentieth century, with a major portion of the story set against the fall of the Philippines and the horror of the Bataan death march at the beginning of World War II. The purpose of this lengthy excursion into history is to fine tune our sense of the development of the hero.

There are a few things that stretched my belief, particularly the behavior of one of the main human characters when he learns a secret of the alien, but I allowed myself to step back from my incredulity and to see it as a further device to explore the main question.

The story moves along quickly, or at least as quickly as I could turn the pages. This may not be amongst the greatest of science fiction novels, but it certainly illustrates how a good premise and construction of a novel can not only sweep us along, but even provide food for thought.

Familiar plot made fresh

Stop me if you've heard this before: A strange alien artifact is found at the bottom of the ocean and ... What's that? You say you have read that same plotline? Yeah, but not like Haldeman tells it.

In Haldeman's hands the story is fresh, thanks to his creation of two very different (from each other as well as from humans) aliens who quite possibly could be immortal. Both have been around long enough to have greeted mankind's first descent out of the trees. One has lived in the ocean, passing time as a great white shark, a killer whale and a dolphin until he (she? it?) takes human form and walks out onto a California beach in 1931. The other has much more experience with the human race and the concept of war.

When the artifact is discovered and taken to Samoa, the stage is set for the aliens and a small group of researchers to finally meet. But don't assume you can guess where the story goes from there. Haldeman is a master of taking readers' expectations and turning them upside down and inside out. He also tells the story in such straight-forward writing that you don't realize until you've finished the book that it was far deeper than you first thought. This is definitely one of those books I'll be saving to read again ... and I have no doubt I'll find new ideas and insights the second time around.

Recently out of college with a degree in Zoology/Chemistry, Palul's adventures in this decade take him beyond the laboratory, from New England to Hawaii, to LA and SF, dense jungles, hot springs, desert lakes, caves, teepees and Mexico; then back across the northern USA to Boston. A war protester and conscientious objector, he escapes the Vietnam War, freaking out the Boston police in the process. He returns in a VW bus to San Francisco by way of the TransCanadian Hwy. His many escapades continue with fragmented romances, LSD, Haight-Ashbury; then again to Oahu and Maui and eventually to the Mountains of Northern California.

Friends and lovers pepper an exciting journey as he searches for beauty and love and meaning.

It is written with self-depreciating humor, yet always a deeper meaning appears to the astute reader. He writes from the perspective of an older man, but selections from some of his fifty-year-old journals are included giving the reader an intimate sense of being there. The journals contain his feelings as well as his adventures.

Included with a number of relevant photos taken during that period are some rare photos of his earlier art works. Throughout his sixties autobiography, we find what lies behind Paul Palul Rideout, the aspiring artist.

Nicely written, very personal, and it's FUN to see how one was seen and is remembered after almost 50 years! :)) Great description of Medical Technology as it used to be before becoming assembly line electronics.. Palul concentrated in his art, Veda became a psychologist.

My friends, the Wild Chimpanzees

The book arrived in super time, the day before I left on my 28 days cruise. I read 4 books on the cruise; with My Friends, the Wild Chimpanzees being one of them.

My only beef with the book is the print was too small. Maybe the lighting in my cabin wasn't too great. I wished the book was in the Kindle books. Then I could adjust the print to be larger. Of course the print size wasn't the author's fault - just a complaint from me about the book.

The rest of the book was interesting reading and the photography was very good.

I enjoyed the book very much.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rodney Saulsberry is one of the top voice-over talents in the country. For more than a decade the Detroit native and University of Michigan graduate has given voice to many successful commercial campaigns, including Toyota, ALPO, Colgate, and numerous movie trailers such as, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Best Man, and Friday. Rodney lends his character voice to that animated Jazzman in those colorful Zatarain’s television spots. As an announcer, he has worked on the NAACP Image Awards and The Essence Awards television specials. The voice of Joe Robbie Robertson on the cartoon series Spider-Man, resides in Agoura, California.

An Easy read for anyone interested in Voiceover

As a fan of Rodney's work I liked the book too. Although he jumps around a bit from topic to topic, the book includes a lot of great advice that beginners to the trade would especially appreciate. Not being a beginner myself but always looking for ways to improve my own efforts, I found it to be a good review of things that any good voice-over artist should keep in mind. His simple straight forward way of explaining how the business works is again something that a novice will appreciate, even though the book is now somewhat dated, being published in 2004. There have been so many technological advances to the industry since this book was written, that it almost begs the need for a follow-up. It does however give a great general overview of what to expect when entering the world of VO work.

It's not a bad book but not a great one either

It's not a bad book but not a great one either. A fairly decent book. I liked Nison's more and i believe it is better to start with that one. If, after reading that one, you feel the need to read something more concerning this subject, candlesticks, than you can choose this one. Other than a supplement i do not believe the book has a purpose.

Very good for candles

Good intro to candlestick bar trading , the first chapters are good, they give you an overview of major signals , especially the second chapter it's really good . Later you also have a good couple of chapters with real examples... but then the author wrote about trend , pattern, elliot wave , etc and all of those topics received a mediocre treatment , it seems like the rest of the book is there just to fill the pages . That said, the candlestick part it's indeed very good .

Robert Chiron, Ph.D., is president of Chiron Group��a consulting firm specializing in creating alignment and unleashing potential in organizations��whose clients range from small businesses to Fortune 100 corporations. He formerly taught at the University of Iowa and Columbia University.

Quaint, but well worth reading

This is an updated version of an old book about interviewing techniques. It is reasonably up-to-date, but it takes a rather quaint view of the hiring process. It assumes that a typical company has a large and politically powerful human-resources department which has been given vast amounts of time, staff, and resources to engage in a fastidiously objective hiring process. It also assumes that a company's management actually knows what the firm's future personnel needs are. Most unrealistically of all, it assumes that HR and line managers actually communicate with one another. Even in 1968 when Chiron & Fears wrote the first edition of this book, this was a pollyannaish viewpoint. In 2003, their assumptions add up to a ludicrous fantasy.
The heart of the book is a detailed explanation of a methodology for conducting structured hiring interviews. It also covers yearly perfomance reviews and related topics. The authors frankly describe how to create an illusory rapport with the interviewee while homing in on the character flaws which might make him or her unfit to hold the job he or she is interviewing for. The flaws the authors think you should be particularly worried about are laziness and stupidity.
It is a useful book for anyone who has to do hiring interviews, even when the company is trying to cut corners in the hiring process. It is even more useful for the interviewee, because after the reading the book, you have a better idea what the person on the other side of the desk is looking for. (By the way, the authors tell interviewers to AVOID sitting on the far side of a desk.)
It is worth buying the book just for the discussion of the dreaded "strengths and weaknesses" question. You should admit to a weakness while proving you don't really have that weakness. A good weakness to admit to seems to be "I don't work hard enough"--- assuming you can convince the interviewer that you are in fact a workaholic.
I have taken a sarcastic view of this book's content, but it is well worth reading and contains many excellent suggestions. Although I personally don't agree with many aspects of Chiron and Fears' methodology, I do think the business world would be a more humane place if more companies used a similar methodology (or just about ANY methodology) to evaluate job applicants.
I gave the book a 5th star for actually being readable and entertaining (unlike most management books.)

a perfect evaluation of an applicant can be quite tricky...

This books leads you through the application process from the employer viewpoint. It shows you where to, what to consider and how to circumvent traps.
It doesn't provide you with worksheet-like lists where you can make crosses to evaluate the candidate.
