Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test ushered in an era of New Journalism, "An American classic" (Newsweek) that defined a generation. "An astonishing book" (The New York Times Book Review) and an unflinching portrait of Ken Kesey, his Merry Pranksters, LSD, and the 1960s.

Amazon.com Review
They say if you remember the '60s, you weren't there. But, fortunately, Tom Wolfe was there, notebook in hand, politely declining LSD while Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters fomented revolution, turning America on to a dangerously playful way of thinking as their Day-Glo conveyance, Further, made the most influential bus ride since Rosa Parks's. By taking On the Road's hero Neal Cassady as his driver on the cross-country revival tour and drawing on his own training as a magician, Kesey made Further into a bully pulpit, and linked the beat epoch with hippiedom. Paul McCartney's Many Years from Now cites Kesey as a key influence on his trippy Magical Mystery Tour film. Kesey temporarily renounced his literary magic for the cause of "tootling the multitudes"--making a spectacle of himself--and Prankster Robert Stone had to flee Kesey's wild party to get his life's work done. But in those years, Kesey's life was his work, and Wolfe infinitely multiplied the multitudes who got tootled by writing this major literary-journalistic monument to a resonant pop-culture moment.

Kesey's theatrical metamorphosis from the distinguished author of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest to the abominable shaman of the "Acid Test" soirees that launched The Grateful Dead required Wolfe's Day-Glo prose account to endure (though Kesey's own musings in Demon Box are no slouch either). Even now, Wolfe's book gives what Wolfe clearly got from Kesey: a contact high. --Tim Appelo

The true story of the birth of the 60's counterculture revolution
By Michael T
Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters become larger than life characters in Tom Wolfe's novelistic treatment of this true story based on extensive interviews with the people involved. This is like Gonzo journalism. I don't know if this predated Hunter S. Thompson, but the style is very entertaining and propels you into the story, especially when he is describing the acid trips, and yes there were many. This starts before LSD was illegal. The Pranksters had the original painted school bus on their cross country trip and the cops had no idea what they were up to. No one had ever seen anything like it. Also documented, of course, are the Acid Tests with the Grateful Dead providing the soundtrack. A must read for anyone with an interest in the hippy movement of the 60's.

A glimpse into the bus
By Phil
A great book, one of my favorites. Fascinating subject, fun to read, and extremely well written, especially since it's narrative non-fiction. Given that half of the action occurs in the characters' minds, and given that three fourths of that is neither real nor readily describable, it has to be said that Wolfe did a truly expert job.

Great History of the American Psychedelic Acid Movement
By R. Schwartz
This book is around 400 pages and a very detailed history, many stories, and it's hard to remember all the facts, you'll have to read the book yourself for that. The story is of the "Intrepid Travelers," Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters, a communal group of acid ingesters who were the progenitors of the acid consciousness in the California, in the US, in the world's consciousness of awareness . . . "your either on the bus or off the bus."

It was the influential chemists, Al Hubbard, Dr. Spaulding and the psychologists, Timothy Leary and Richard Albert, the Harvard psychology professors, who discovered for themselves psylobilin and with Michael Hollingshead and Albert Hoffman, LSD and subsequently held experiments using the right set and setting with experienced psychedelic guides. Yet to this the Merry Pranksters would say, "f**k that!" because they were from a different movie of living; in the now, the unserene and lurid art, your brain being your only guide, not some experienced taker and specific setting for a safe non-freak-out trip (and there were a lot of "freak-outs" from many young, emotionally inexperienced). And the acid influenced cultural movement they began in the early 1960's. It was Leary and Albert who endorsed the "set and setting," the intellectual approach or non-organizational religious approach, the religious experience of the mystics, in their dialogue with acid and mushrooms. With Kesey and the Pranksters it was spontaneous, wild party kind of living in Day-Glow colors, in the multimedia sound and movie.

The Pranksters account starts in North Beach on Perry Lane, which becomes a major hang out for all sorts and eventually ends up in a cottage near La Honda, where the loud party of outlandish, Day-Glo painted woods - rigged with microphones and massive sound equipment, in the communal life takes on a new meaning. The Hell's Angels befriend the Pranksters and there are stories of personalities, telepathic and psychic connections and synchronicity in new fields of human life, the overmind, the collective unspoken mind of the psychedelic group. The religious realm of mystical awareness as in the game of I-Ching and dream wars. The Jungian "synchronicity" seemed to occur uncanningly many times, as their bus out of gas in the middle of nowhere only to have a tanker pull up and fuel them from nowhere. The sign on their door welcoming the Hell's Angels to end up having them and succeeding in their prankster madness. The sign on their door welcoming the Beatles, did not synchronize them to appear, but what did was having Oswley appear, the famous acid maker, who in the ways of synchronistic noncausal effect, was responsible for the finest acid which spread to England, the acid that brought the Beatles to experience the unspoken mind which ended them up traveling by bus across the English countryside with cameras and microphones.

Imagine a Day-Glo painted bus, the magic bus, with Day-Glo painted people and clothes, tripping on acid traveling from California to the New York World's Faire with music blasting, a freak show on wheels, all in the year 1964! And Neil Cassidy (Jack Kerouac's buddy and drive from On The Road) driving the bus!! And their trip to the legendary Millbrook, thinking it would be some historic meeting with Leary and the Pranksters, but instead it was the mystical religious and intellectuals verses the wild party, American flag draped, painted, loud blaring music, party animals of psychedelic madness. I think it relates to the age and the introvert and/or extrovert type personalities that played the large part.

It was actually Stewart Brand who thought up the great Trip Festival of January 1966. The series of acid test parties held by Kesey and the Pranksters helped spawn the movement of higher consciousness, all held at the last minute, the same day notification was put, and the Pranksters playing their instruments, then finding a local band, the warlocks - later known as the Grateful Dead - to play and Roy Seburn's light shows at the acid tests. It was the acid test held in a Unitarian church where the Kool-Aid was spiked, unknowingly to those attending. It was not teachings in the stiff, reverent language and texts of scholarly limnings found in various religions being taught but instead an aura, a religious experience, an awareness that flashed deeper than cerebration, the tradition of the great prophets. People like the beats Allen Ginsberg and his entourage and Neil Cassidy were there. As this spread, so the acid tests, later without Kesey and Haight Ashbury became the scene.

Later on Kesey gets busted twice for weed and is on the run from the law, to Mexico and back until caught - he was in their movie that time, fortunately most charges dropped. A lot to read of the characters and generally a great book to get an idea of a unique and special time and place in history where a much larger degree of freedom existed for the white middle class with the ability to gain other realms of consciousness available for the taking. A great pictorial book on this is "On The Bus" by Paul Perry, Michael Schwartz, Neil Ortenberg & Ken Babbs.

From Library Journal
"A. Huxley died at 69/ much too early for such a/ fierce talent." Now in his seventh decade, Bukowski is preoccupied with death, but in such a way that he spices his usual flat monotone with bits of welcome humor. While continuing his focus on life in bars and at the racetrack, these poems enlarge the meditative tone begun in You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense ( LJ 1/87). Bukowski remembers the first time he read great authors or heard classical composers; he reflects on old friends, co-workers, and lovers, but with a new gentleness, as in "Darkling," a wonderfully lyric love poem to his wife. Poems such as this make it easier to spot the poetic craft at work behind Bukowski's understated common speech. Finally, the poet's emphasis on reflection and mellowed tone will, one hopes, enlarge the poet's huge but specialized readership.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Enjoyable
By Alexander Gruber
I'm not a poetry fanatic, but I'm trying to get into it. This was one of two books by Bukowski that I bought to do so (the other being You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense). I found both very enjoyable and have moved on to read some of his other works since then. These were the first enjoyable books of poetry I'd read in my life. I would recommend them for anyone who is trying to get into poetry as a hobby, especially if (like me) you are not an English major or aspiring poet, and thus are more able to take these for what they are, rather than evaluate their literary merit from established standards. In other words, I connected with this book on a personal level, not an academic level, and I encourage you to read it if you would like to do so too.

Down and Out in LA
By Joseph S. Romaninsky
For my taste, Bukowski is a better novelist than poet. Much the same territories are explored in the
poems with less skill.. Still, to one fascinated by accounts of life in various marginal groups (the beat
generation, organized crime, carnies, subway tunnel dwellers, hobos, etc.), these poems by a literate and
observant alcoholic writer were a good read.

My favorite Bukowski book by far...
By Kimberly
The poems in this collection are beautiful because they are so honest and forthcoming that I couldn't put the book down. Old Hank just has a way about him and the way he composes poetry, I'm happy I found him.

Good deeds have their rewards -- and a neat lesson for young listeners
By Rob Natiuk
I wish more of life would award us hot-air balloon rides for good deeds! That's the premise of this cutely illustrated children's books, for about ages 3 to 8. But who decides which deeds are worth a high ride? The "Voice" decides after interviewing each creature. And he's rather arbitrary -- deciding which actions were active good deeds and which were passive, achieved by NOT doing bad deeds. But for young listeners/readers, this distinction might be lost on them. They will wonder WHY "the Voice" makes such selections, not letting certain creatures in even though what they did sounded good.

The font is boring -- needs to better match the vibrancy of the illustrations and story. But the story is good, and with an adult reader's help, can make children think about good deeds.

Acclaim for Storming
“Dropping (literally) dieselpunk fantasy elements smack into the middle of an action adventure story revolving around a biplane pilot set in 1920s historical fiction was a brilliant idea. This novel is a joy to read!”—Suzan Robertson

“Memorably colorful and deeply knit-together characters captain this addictively charming page-turner with dialogue that sounds like an ash bat cracking a home run centerfield and proto-European dieselpunk undertones gild an aesthetic of pure Americana, exotically nostalgic and yet somehow effortlessly resonant, making us feel every punch of action down to the last gasp of a superb climax.”—Luke Taylor

“It's just one of those stories that's plain fun to sit down with. Rich, meaningful, well-crafted, heartwarming. I can't remember the last book where I enjoyed myself so thoroughly in the reading process.”—Schuyler McConkey

Book Description
In the high-flying, heady world of 1920s aviation, brash pilot Robert “Hitch” Hitchcock’s life does a barrel roll when a young woman in an old-fashioned ball gown falls from the clouds smack in front of his biplane. As fearless as she is peculiar, Jael immediately proves she’s game for just about anything, including wing-walking in his struggling airshow. In return for her help, she demands a ride back home . . . to the sky.

Hitch thinks she’s nuts—until he steers his plane into the midst of a bizarre storm and nearly crashes into a strange airship like none he’s ever run afoul of, an airship with the power to control the weather. Caught between a corrupt sheriff and dangerous new enemies from above, Hitch must take his last chance to gain forgiveness from his estranged family, deliver Jael safely home before she flies off with his freewheeling heart, and save his Nebraska hometown from storm-wielding sky pirates.

Cocky, funny, and full of heart, Storming is a jaunty historical adventure / dieselpunk mash-up that combines rip-roaring steampunk adventure and small-town charm with the thrill of futuristic possibilities.

More Acclaim for Storming
“Read it for its colorful small-town sky circus setting, peppered with the accurate historical small-town America airshow and aviation fiction details, shot through with the fantastic otherwordly dieselpunk threads. But read it even more for the wonderful, damaged, flawed, funny, three-dimensional characters who pull you into their world where the storm is building around them and keep you guessing until the very end.”—Nina Clark

“Who doesn’t love action books that open with a feisty woman in an old-fashioned dress plopping out of the sky and onto an airplane? Right from the beginning, Weiland constructs a story that forces readers to ask questions—and to keep reading.”—Bo Burnette

“Storming is a unique adventure novel that is sure to interest flying buffs, adventure lovers, women’s fiction fans, character aficionados, and people who simply enjoy a well-written and thoughtful story.”—Garrett Amerson

Another Fantastic Story by K.M. Weiland!
By Lady Bibliophile
The night I got Storming, I promised myself I would be good and get things done before I opened it. Well, I wasn't good, and the opening scene of a nighttime plane ride and a woman falling out of the sky sucked me right in to the adventure. Storming delivers the same Weiland trademark of vivid characters and masterful plotting that I've come to love and anticipate. It's a different flavor from Dreamlander--historical dieselpunk rather than fantasy--and as I've never read dieselpunk before, it took a while to grow acquainted with the flavor. While Dreamlander is a book where most of the story takes place in a rich new world, Storming is a book where an ordinary world full of biscuits and overalls has to grapple with the extraordinary invading. In some ways, I liked that just as much and even better.

Hitch's hometown Nebraska world was heartwarming. From the Berringer brothers feuding over tomatoes, to the rowdy air of an early 1900s airshow, to a little boy's starved longing for a dog and a plane ride, I loved the setting. Those gossipy, loyal towns with hurts to deal with and heart to meet them with always make me smile. Everyone from motherly Nan to stalwart Griff to that snake of a Sheriff Campbell are characters you love to love or love to hate as the story dictates. And I loved the little red Jenny plane, as good as a human character in her own right, almost as much as Hitch did.

Weiland narrates mostly inside Hitch's head and the little boy Walter's. She gave the narrative such excellent flavor, with Hitch's similes. Sure as gravy, burn like the devil's bacon. It feels like they come off completely naturally, though I'm sure in reality they took a lot of work to craft. She's good at making the narrative match the personality and education of the character, so that you know exactly who's picking up the point of view just by the way she writes.

And Jael herself. Fantastic example of a strong woman who doesn't need to be a brash woman to do pretty amazing things. She's a wing walker, and a pretty bold, brave lass with an endearing broken English way of talking. But she doesn't need to put down others to find her own strength. She's all about joining everybody's strengths together to get the job done. She really deserves to be in a top heroine's list.

The kissing scene is hilarious. I love the first storm ride with Hitch and Jael. The scene where Hitch takes Walter up in the plane. Earl trying desperately to get the Jenny running again after every escapade. Taos the dog. It's just one of those stories that's plain fun to sit down with. Rich, meaningful, well-crafted, heartwarming. I can't remember the last book where I enjoyed myself so thoroughly in the reading process.

And what a humdinger of a climax. I had no idea. No idea. The story up to that point had been a fun adventure, and any crisis points were more relaxing enjoyable than traumatizing. But she turned up the heat and saved the fireworks for the final show. Anything I could have imagined as far as the resolution of the theme and the final climax was wonderfully surpassed. I sat spellbound to my computer screen while I finished up the final chapters. My only worry--I knew that Weiland wasn't afraid to make tough choices, and I couldn't bear that this world I had come to know and love would be ripped apart by sorrow. But I also knew that whatever Weiland chose to do, would be deeply fitting and fully satisfying.

The lessons of home, responsibility, adventure, and family were beautifully, beautifully done. Go read the book. That's all I can say. There's so much to love I could just keep listing it all, but it's much better for you to experience the heart-stirring, breath-taking moments for yourselves. Thanks to Katie for a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Well-written character-driven historical meshes uneasily with underwhelming dieselpunk speculation
By Suzannah
KM Weiland's eagerly awaited STORMING is in genre quite unlike both her previous full-length novels - one of them a historical romance set during the Third Crusade and the other a portal fantasy adventure. This time she heads home to her own state of Nebraska in the 1920s and mixes a charming yet irresponsible flying-ace, a mysterious gamine with cutely mangled English, and a giant airship that controls the weather into an eminently entertaining story of biplanes, adventure, and redemption.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I should have really loved it. All the trademark KM Weiland qualities are in evidence: vivid characterisation, craftsmanlike plotting, unabashed adventure, and wonderful themes informed but not intruded upon by her Christian faith. In addition, Weiland's development as an author is evident even from her previous novel, DREAMLANDER. Her characters have that bit much more depth (even the airheaded Lilla is so very, very, very much better than the similar character in DREAMLANDER), her plot is more believable, the writing style has gone up another notch, the setting is vividly evoked.

So I should have loved it. Yet somehow, STORMING had a huge amount of trouble getting me to give a hoot, and I have no clue why. I have nitpicks, of course. In some ways, this book felt like two different genres sliced down the middle and glued uncertainly together. One of them was a quiet, character-driven historical drama, and the other was a crazy, pulpy tale of fist-fights, airships, and machines that control the weather, presided over by a villain named Zlo. The fantasy/sci-fi/dieselpunk elements kept getting sidelined so the characters could meditate on their feelings. Hitch and Walter's backstory was given painstaking and even redundant detail (I felt the book could easily have been trimmed by up to a quarter) - but Jael and Schturming got hardly any detail.

Speculative fiction is all about asking "what if?"; making extrapolations from a few starting assumptions. If alien life did exist on other planets, and if medieval cosmology were true, then how would the Green Lady of Perelandra react to a temptation similar to Eve's? If there was a secret airship that was capable of controlling the weather, what effect would that have on the course of history/the life of a charmingly roguish barnstormer/anything, really? Serious science-fiction or even fantasy speculation was missing from STORMING and I felt those elements only existed as set-dressing. SPOILERS FOLLOW! For example, there are approximately 130 people living on Schturming, but we never get a close look at any of them except Jael and Zlo, who fundamentally act as Plot Catalyst and Villain respectively. We don't find out how in such a small and presumably inbred community anyone could possibly be considered an outcast. We don't find out how the weather machine is supposed to work, and at the end it's destroyed instead of being redeveloped or scrounged or otherwise used. SPOILERS END. All the dieselpunk elements could have been removed from the story, and it would have been a little more quiet, a lot less engaging...but substantially the same story.

Genre problems aside, KM Weiland deserves plenty of credit for this book, and I feel dimly certain that my lacklustre response says more about my TINY, SHRIVELLED HEART than about her skill. For all its more obvious flaws, DREAMLANDER was a much better speculative-fiction-genre read. I have a hunch STORMING will appeal to fans of character-driven historical fiction above fans of sci-fi adventure, and the beauty of the independent publishing route is that books like this that don't fit neatly into mass-market categories will get their moment to shine. But, personally, it wasn't my cup of tea.

K.M. Weiland's Storming truly soars
By Narnian
In the 1920s world of daredevil barnstorming, intrepid pilot “Hitch” Hitchcock zooms back into the Nebraska hometown he left nine years ago, hoping simply to win an airshow and gun it back out of Scottsbluff. Instead, he finds the troubles of his past—unforgiving family members and a corrupt sheriff—resurrected in a whole new way. But that’s only the beginning of Hitch’s troubles.

On a test flight one night, a woman in an old-fashioned ball gown literally falls from the sky and nearly collides with Hitch’s plane. Suddenly he finds his story intertwined with hers as she—a strange-speaking young woman named Jael—demands he help her return home. Home to the sky. Home to a secret she calls “Schturming.”

Who doesn’t love a book that opens with a feisty woman in an old-fashioned dress plopping out of the sky and onto an airplane? Right from the beginning, Weiland constructs a story that forces readers to ask questions—and to keep reading. Who is this Jael? Who is she running from? And, most importantly, where did she come from? The entire novel is crafted in such a way to keep the reader guessing. When one question is answered, another is raised. (Also, some of these questions and answers lead to one humdinger of a plot twist. It’s a twist I suspected early in the book, but that only made it all the more thrilling when it came to pass.)

Story structure remains—of course—Katie’s strong point. (Any writers among us ought to read her book Structuring Your Novel. It’s pure gold.) Storming’s structure is practically flawless, so I won’t discuss it much. What really stands out, though, are her characters.

Somehow, with every book, Katie manages to make protagonists that are 1) Deeply flawed yet still lovable and relatable and 2) Incredibly different from the others she has written. Hitch struggles with his family, his flying troupe, his feelings for Jael, and his felt duty to return her to her mysterious home-in-the-clouds. Speaking of Jael…she might just be my favorite character from any of Weiland’s novels. And that’s saying a lot. Jael’s adventurous, loyal spirit makes you admire her, and her sharp wittiness will incite more than a few laughs. She’s more than worth the price of admission. Another character of note is the practically mute young boy, Walter.

I could go on, of course. Storming is full of thrill, mystery, and drama. I laughed out loud more than once while reading it. Even better, I cried more than once. The novel’s themes—the true meaning of bravery, the importance of family and roots, and the ultimate will of God in our lives—shine remarkably in this truly remarkable story. Once again, bravo to you, Katie.

Storming truly soars.

Going Gray: What I Learned about Beauty, Sex, Work, Motherhood, Authenticity, and Everything Else That Really Matters, by Anne Kreamer

Anne Kreamer considered herself a youthful 49 until a photo of herself with her teenage daughter stopped her in her tracks. In one unguarded moment she saw herself for what she really was -- a middle-aged woman with her hair dyed much too harshly. In that one moment Kreamer realized that she wasn't fooling anyone about her age and decided it was time to get real and embrace a more authentic life. She set out for herself a program to let her hair become its true color, and along the way discovered her true self.
Going Gray is Kreamer's exploration of that experience, and a frank, warm and funny investigation of aging as a female obsession. Through interviews, field experiments, and her own everywoman's chronicle, Kreamer probes the issues behind two of the biggest fears aging women face: Can I be sexually attractive as a gray-haired, middle-aged woman? and Will I be discriminated against in the work world? Her answers will surprise you.
In searching for the balance between attractiveness and authenticity, Kreamer's journey of middle-aging illiminates in a friendly, useful, and entertaining way the politics and personal costs of this generation's definition of "aging gracefully.

From Publishers Weekly
Kreamer has been creative director of Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite and columnist for Martha Stewart Living. She has a loving husband (author and radio personality Kurt Andersen) and two daughters. She was 49 and still pretending to be young. So not only did she decide to stop coloring her hair, she set out to discover the practical implications of going gray. If she wanted, could she still find men willing to date her? Was gray a handicap in the job market? Not surprisingly, she found that it isn't so much what other people think, it's how we feel. Her consultants reminded her that hair color is only one part of a woman's appearance; a new haircut, well-selected cosmetics, new clothes and even plastic surgery will affect the success of a woman's look. Kreamer's chatty, confessional style is appealing, as are the gray-positive cultural icons she invokes (George Clooney, Helen Mirren, Emmylou Harris). But when she declares, I remain at least as vain as the next person. I intend to continue spending large sums to have my hair cut and styled, she undercuts her own argument that repackaging ourselves can be a dangerously slippery slope. In the end, she's learned to accept her own aging; readers over 55, however, may find that premature. (Sept.)

Okay, so it's NOT about global warming.....
By 1voracious reader
Turning 50 this year, I started to notice that my so called "friends" were pointedly asking me when I was going to begin coloring my hair. It never occurred to me, before reading Anne Kreamer's wonderful book, to ask them why they were coloring their hair. Interestly, many of my friends were aware of Ms. Kreamer's book, but none had the interest, nor I guess, the courage to read her book. It is really a facinating memoir about one woman's decision to go gray. While some may argue that because she was a woman of privilege and the choice to go gray would not monetarily affect her, it truly is an important memoir about how one woman sees herself growing older.

Her story resonated with me. I was empowered by her candor. I applaud Ms. Kreamer for writing this book and hope mothers' of daughters ultimately read it.

Reassuring
By Ginger
Okay, I'll admit it. I needed a bit of support in order to garner the strength to let my natural silver grow out. My family heritage from my father's side is to go prematurely gray. He was 100% gray by age 20, my brother by age 30. After the monthly ritual of coloring my hair for twenty years in order to maintain my idea of 'youth' I had no idea when I went 100% gray, but I do know the silver sprouts started in my teens. They were growing in earnest after the birth of my first child in my 20's, thus the haircolor habit began.

I had been toying with the idea of going natural for several years. I eat organic food, plus use natural cosmetics and cleaners. It seemed counter intuitive to be soaking my scalp in petroleum chemicals once a month so other people would view me a certain way (i.e. young). I developed an allergic reaction to haircolor last August, culminating in welts on my scalp and forehead. The final decision was made for me. I'll let the silver grow out.

After coloring my hair for all these years, going natural made me face my fears. I could hide behind blonde hair all these years; it gives the illusion of youth. But, it can also blur individuality. At one point, it is possible to blend in with the other 40 or 50 or 60-something dye-job blondes. I don't want to erase who I am, it is time to define it. There is no more hiding when you go gray.

Anne Kreamer's research and insight gave me the boost I needed, plus looking at images of gorgeous silver-haired ladies online. (Emmylou Harris is stunning. Jamie Lee Curtis is my hero.) Okay...if they can do this, so can I.

My natural color is about 50% grown out now, and I have to say that it's more of a sparkling silver than I realized. I might actually like this better than the blonde. I have an appointment with my hairdresser in a few weeks when I'll have the last of the blonde cut out and say goodbye to "her," the artificial blonde former me and hello to the actual, authentic me. Thanks for your help in this process, Anne.

Principles of International Criminal Law, by Gerhard Werle, Florian Jessberger

Principles of International Criminal Law has become one of the most influential textbooks in the field of international criminal justice. It offers a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the foundations and general principles of substantive international criminal law, including thorough discussion of its core crimes. It provides a detailed understanding of the general principles, sources, and evolution of international criminal law, demonstrating how it has developed, and how its application has changed. After establishing the general principles, the book assesses the four key international crimes as defined by the statute of the International Criminal Court: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.

This new edition revises and updates work with developments in international criminal justice since 2009. It includes new material on the principle of culpability as one of the fundamental principles of international criminal law, the notion of terrorism as a crime under international law, the concept of direct participation in hostilities, the problem of so-called unlawful combatants, and the issue of targeted killings. The book retains its highly-acclaimed systematic approach and consistent methodology, making the book essential reading for both students and scholars of international criminal law, as well as for practitioners and judges working in the field.

Review
Review from previous edition: "... the book's structure and style allow for its use both as a reference work and as a practitioner's manual ... the author's scholarly modesty in naming his treatise Principles of International Criminal Law deserves a particular mention. Professors Ian Browlie
and Eric David had both previously adopted similar titles for their classical monographs on the law of peace and the law of armed conflict. If the experience of those modestly-named volumes is a any guide, Principles of International Criminal Law may also have a very successful future ahead."

Interested in international crimes? this is your book!
By Nino Kometiani
This book not only reviews the international crimes but also talks about problems that international criminal law faces when it comes to the elements of crimes. A really outstanding book, no other book gave me such detailed account of international crimes. I've used all the famous authors' books but Werle was the one really helped me through my finals. As for the quality of the book, it's good, it's not too thick, which doesn't make it uncomfortable to carry with you wherever you need to. I can honestly say that this is the best book you can get to learn about international crimes in depth.
