About the Author

Ansel C. Ugural is a visiting professor of mechanical engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey. He has held faculty positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he has served for two decades as a professor and chairman of the mechanical engineering department. Professor Ugural earned his MS in mechanical engineering and PhD in engineering mechanics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is the author of several books, including Stresses in Beams, Plates, and Shells (CRC Press, 3rd ed., 2010). In addition, he has published numerous articles in trade and professional journals.

Great Modernization of Familiar Beatles tunes!

Like all the Hal Leonard Jazz-Play-Along series this new addition is both challenging to play, great jazz version arrangements (very creative interpretations that not only are good..but add new "flavor" to all the included songs), and useful for practice or performance. As a matter of fact, I have a solo act and will be performing several of the songs in this book today! well worth the $ and useful for beginner to pro players!

Great jazz arrangements, well worth getting

I LOVE this play-along volume. I'm a hardcore, longtime Aebersold user - and this is the very first play-along I've tried from this particular series. Very glad I did.

These jazz versions of Beatles classic are consistently inventive and often challenging. I think some people - both experienced improvisers and newcomers - think that play-alongs in general are cheesy. While nothing is a substitute for working with real live musicians, I think book/CD combos such as these are indispensable for practicing improv.

The CD has each of the tunes with a horn playing the melody line over the piano, bass, drums backing. And then the same track without the melody line. My only real issue is that the tracks are shorter - Aebersold's provide much more room to stretch out and improvise over the changes.

"Let It Be" is given a reggae-ish vibe. "Lady Madonna" has calypso feel. "Come Together" is rendered as appropriately funky fusion. "Fool on the Hill" becomes a bossa nova. I love working with these and plan to incorporate these versions (the chord progressions have been reharmonized and work very well) in a live setting.

For serious Jazz musicians only! You may have played Beatles tunes before, but not like this. These are definately Jazz versions of these Beatles standards. A must have for the Jazz musician who wants to add Beatles songs to his set list.

Learn AI with Ruby

Ruby is a great programming language to learn and it can be used for many different purposes. One of them is artificial intelligence and this book explains in a simple and understandable manner how to do it. There are lots of practical examples in the book so it is easy to follow, but I would recommend at least some of the basic knowledge of Ruby before starting with this book. It is not complicated, but AI is very complex and you would do yourself a favor with familiarizing with the basic principles. Other than that, this is a very good guidebook.

Not bad; not good

Well... it's not a bad book but I don't think it covers "AI" in more than a very generic sense. The author introduces a few simple techniques for resolving schedules via brute force iterative approach (not inappropriate for many use cases), simple case logic, and a few tree/acyclic graph solvers. As a very basic introduction to these types of problems it's not a bad introduction. He touches on algorithmic complexity of the approaches but avoids detailed discussion of the algorithms behind the methods. Ruby code is given for all approaches and it's easy to follow. There's a very brief intro to enough Ruby to understand the code even if you've never touched Ruby.

I can't heavily recommend it but I also think the book achieves a reasonable set of goals for its (apparent) intended audience. I'm reluctant about the use of "AI" in the title and text but it's a loaded term in any case so I'll let that go. Don't buy the book -- even at the low cost -- without using Amazon's "look inside" feature to at least view the table of contents and sample pages. With these caveats, it might be useful to a Ruby -- or other beginning -- programmer needing quick solutions to similar problems as covered in this short book. If you're not in that category, I'd skip it and pick up a good general algorithm text covering data structures and searching.

BTW, the Kindle version is a much better buy if you decide you're a fit.

But we may learn from it.' This book is an education.

They are subdivided into 32 thematic sessions starting from the genesis of materials to their applications through their characterisation. The paper volume contains the full texts of the 5 plenary and 6 keynote lectures and informative summaries of 150 oral and 540 poster presentations. These contributions have been selected among the 903 submissions received from a total of 57 countries!

Besides the fields of zeolite science always represented at IZC (synthesis, characterisation, catalysis, etc�), some subjects strengthened their position (mesoporous materials, theory and modelling), new areas emerge (advanced materials, environmental and life sciences) and older ones regain interest (natural zeolites). The understanding and development of the unique properties of porous materials relies on a unique blend of multidisciplinary knowledge: material science, with the implication of organic and colloid chemistry, to prepare micro- and mesoporous materials, surface and adsorption science sustained by theory and modelling to understand the peculiar behaviour of molecules in confined systems, special branches of catalysis, physics, chemical engineering and life science to design novel applications. The gathering of these elements is at the basis of a fruitful and evolutionary zeolite science, as it is hopefully reflected by these proceedings.
